James Kellerman Obituary
A natural-born philosopher and devoted father, Jim died on January 28, 2026, after a life filled with art, architecture, travel, books, good food, and conversation. For years he hosted pizza salons that brought people together to enjoy his legendary pizza, drink beer, and talk smart. His sons, Max and Sam, were the center of his life. He delighted in his granddaughter's spirit and sense of humor.
Jim was born to Edgar and Marie Kellerman on December 10, 1943, in Watertown, WI. His lifelong sense of adventure led him to join the Civil Air Patrol in high school and travel to Portugal. In his early twenties he went by plane, bus, thumb, and beer truck from Wisconsin to Mexico to Brazil.
A graduate of UW-Stevens Point, he taught high school social studies, challenging his students to develop a curious and questioning mind. "One of the best teachers I ever had," said a former student and lifelong friend. From teaching Jim went on to a career as an advocate for aging and disability rights. His work helped change how communities support and care for the elderly and people with disabilities.
After retiring, Jim wandered through the western United States in his pickup and trailer, meeting his sons along the way for on-the-road adventures. Jim loved to spend time on his screen porch reading, listening to WPR, and observing the comings and goings on Esther Beach Road, in true "philosopher king" fashion! He was open-hearted, generous, and a fierce advocate for racial and social justice.
Jim's death follows those of his parents and sister, Mary Lemminger. He is survived by sons Max Kellerman and Sam Kellerman (daughter-in-law Bornali Kundu and granddaughter Arunima Kundu Kellerman); brothers Joe Kellerman (Joan) and Bob Kellerman (Jo Chern); sister Jane Kellerman; and three generations of nieces and nephews. Jim's family extended to longtime friends who were part of his circle of support as living with Parkinson's became more challenging, including Jane Sadusky (former spouse), Kimberly Bean, and Dave and Jo Grandkoski.
"Fight the good fight!" Jim would say. In lieu of flowers, please support your local community center and our immigrant neighbors pursing the American Dream. Be kind, help your community, and vote.
Jim will be buried in a private service at Natural Path Sanctuary. His family invites friends to join them and share their "Jim stories" on Sunday, February 15 from 2 to 5 pm at Stone Porch Alehouse, Veronal, WI.
