John David Schmelzer
October 17, 1949 - July 27, 2024
OREGON - John David Schmelzer, age 74, of Oregon, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. He was born on Oct. 17, 1949, in Madison, Wis., the son of David and Mary (Dederich) Schmelzer. After being kicked out of two elementary schools, he graduated from Central High School in 1968.
John joined the U.S. Navy in 1968 and served on the USS Providence for four years. While living on a ship wasn't his first choice of career, John was very proud of his military service. After being discharged, he joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union and was a member of Local 18. John later retired from the USPS after working as an area maintenance technician for 35 years. John and Margaret (Maggie) were joined in marriage on April 28, 1984. He greatly enjoyed his "Friday night bank runs," which included stopping at every bar on the right.
John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margaret; daughters, Jennifer and Ashley Schmelzer; honorary daughters, Karin Keller and Tina Raspe; brothers, Michael (Deb) Schmelzer and Gary (Connie) Schmelzer; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Anna Schmelzer Fontana.
A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, with Father Randy Budnar presiding. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will take place at Prairie Mound Cemetery with military honors and a luncheon to follow.
John wants you to remember these three things: "Sometimes "Good Enough" isn't good enough," so do it right. Christian Brothers is the only REAL brandy. And "If you would have voted for Bernie we wouldn't be in this mess."
A special thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the VA and UW Hospitals.
Memorials will be sent to John's favorite charities. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
