Marilyn Ryan Obituary

Marilyn Jean Ryan

MADISON - Marilyn Jean Ryan, Madison, 82, was released from her struggle with a long illness on September 16, 2024.

She leaves behind Larry, her devoted husband of sixty years; her loving son, James (Manchester, Mich.); and her sister and lifelong confidante and kindred spirit, Susan Church (Donald), Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Laura, forever cherished in her mother's heart and mind; and by her parents, James and Ethel (Gilchrist) Cotter. Her life was enriched by close relationships with her cousin, Richard Mulvaney and the large Gilchrist clan. She also valued immensely her connections with her Ryan relatives by marriage and with her chosen family, who know who they are. The generosity and care of Jeri Lynn and David Knocke greatly lightened her spirits during the last difficult years of her life.

The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Hospice for their exemplary caregiving during Marilyn's final illness.

Born in New York City, Marilyn moved to Madison at age eight and was a lifelong resident of the city, apart from several years in the 1990s when Larry's work took the family to Ann Arbor, Mich. She derived great pleasure and satisfaction from learning and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. With the arrival of Laura and later James, she chose fulltime motherhood and never regretted that decision. From her teenage obsession with the mastery of each new dance move on American Bandstand, to ballroom dance, to aerobics, as a participant, instructor, and choreographer, she was never happier than when moving to music. Marilyn also spent many pleasant hours wandering ocean beaches, the bigger the waves, the better, and indulging her passion for reading. Throughout her life, she enthused over every dog she encountered, and a succession of canine companions captured her heart. Well-versed in the complexities of contemporary politics, Marilyn intelligently and forcefully asserted her views around countless dining room tables.

Over many years, Marilyn negotiated numerous health challenges with courage and the determination to live life to the fullest. She cared deeply about her family and friends, who are left wondering how we will manage without our ever-vigilant worrier to keep us safe.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In memory of Marilyn, please hug a child you love, pet a dog, save an elephant, be kind to each other, and if you so wish, make a donation to your favorite charity.
