Roderick Cook Obituary
MADISON - Roderick Cook passed away suddenly on September 24, 2024, at age 57. He was a long-time Madison, Wis. resident, world traveler, brilliant writer and illustrator, devotee of dogs, and aficionado of the absurd. Rod was deeply tuned in to the music and art he loved and shared with so many. He studied political history and international politics and was a pacifist at heart. All these things came together in a completely unique and beautiful way in Rod. A graduate of East High and UW-Madison, Rod also worked towards a master's degree in library science. He was a former chef, Union Cab driver, WORT-FM volunteer, and a regular poll worker. Rod made friends easily. His friends and family were of the utmost importance to him. When Rod lived in Austin, he once visited a cemetery with friends, saw a bench where someone inscribed a message hoping their loved ones would gather there and talk, and he said, "That's what I want when I die. I want my friends to come hang out on Rod's bench." And so, his family and friends invite you to celebrate Rod's life at the Harmony Bar on Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 12 to 4 p.m., where all the seats will be Rod's bench. We love you, Rod, and hope your path forward is easier than it was here on earth. Happy trails. Until we meet again.

I have so many memories of Rod. I remember him dancing at teenage parties. He was the first and last in the dance floor. I remember that the best, zaniest letters I ever received came from him. He also used to make tapes and CDs of music that was eclectic and always perfect medicine for whatever was bothering me. He was a deep thinker and philosopher with one of the kindest hearts I have known. I will find a bench here in Austin and dedicate it to him privately.
