Hammons, Roger Desmond

COTTAGE GROVE - Roger Desmond Hammons, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 6, 2021. He was born Feb. 6, 1944, in Ronceverte, W.Va., son of Desmond Edward and Bernice Shirley (Lewis) Hammons. He graduated Richwood W.Va. High School in 1962. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Bertha "Bertie" Workman, on Aug. 22, 1962, in Chicago, Ill. They were married 37 years and raised three children.

They moved to Madison, Wis., where Roger worked for Oscar Mayer for 31 years and retired in 1996. He was an only child, but he grew so close with Bertie's family that they became his own.

He was known for his sense of humor, kindness, and generosity to all those around him. He enjoyed camping, motorcycle and ATV riding, gaming, and spending time with extended family.

He is survived by his children, Rod (Paula), John and Wayne (Jocelyn); grandchildren, Eric, Connor, Allison, and Wyatt; and Jackie McIntosh, his companion of 21 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bertie; infant daughter, Brenda; daughter-in-law, Rachel Hammons; brothers-in-law, Ray Smith and Noel Workman; and sister-in-law, Betty Workman.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI, on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Cottage Grove Cemetery.
