Stephen Muranyi Obituary

Muranyi, Stephen M.

MONROE - Stephen M. Muranyi, age 95, of Monroe, Wis., passed on to eternal life on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at his home. He was born on Dec. 27, 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Joseph and Kathern (Maitiz) Muranyi. Steve was united in marriage to Beverly Hicks in August 1950. The couple relocated to Monroe, Wis., in 2006 to be near their sons. Beverly preceded Steve in death on March 14, 2019, after nearly 70 years of marriage.

Steve, at 17, joined the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II on a gunner ship that was stationed at Normandy during that invasion. Like the rest of that amazing generation, he never talked much about war. He did share that if the explosions he witnessed weren't going to kill the enemy, it made for a hell of a Fourth of July show! He was a strong man for his size and had a welcoming grip that put most men he met on their knees. He had to apologize many times for actually hurting people when shaking their hand.

Steve was also very particular and that fared well for being an electrician. He loved his employment at the Chevy Tonawanda plant where he worked third shift because it allowed him to play golf every day. He talked very highly of General Motors as it offered him a quality of life he hadn't anticipated. Steve worked a lot of overtime hours to pay for all the equipment his sons needed for golf and hockey. There was nothing too good for his kids. He bought them the best.

To say Steve had a passion for golf would be an understatement. He absolutely loved the game and the camaraderie. He was always working to get better, but mostly he just enjoyed the challenge the game of golf gave him. He played most of his golf at Sheridan Park in the Town of Tonawanda and most recently at Monroe Country Club. His sons, Mike and Rob, became PGA Golf Professionals at Monroe Country Club and Monona Golf Course respectively. Steve was very proud of his boys and enjoyed watching them play in tournaments.

Steve had a big heart and loved his grandson and granddaughter dearly. He was blessed with a great-grandson in 2019 who brought much love and laughter into his last years.

He is survived by two sons, Michael (Shelley) and Rob (Kathy); two grandchildren, Kristen and Patrick; and a great-grandson, Luke. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent, Kalman, and John; and a sister, Mary.

Private family services will be held. A memorial fund will be established in Steve's name for the Monroe Clinic Hospice. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net.

The Muranyi family wishes to express their love and gratitude for the wonderful caregivers of Joyce's Home Care. Every day for the past two years they were with Steve, supporting him, keeping him safe, and sharing his stories and many long days.
