Dan Barsness Obituary

Dan Barsness

February 19, 1950 - February 6, 2026

Boise, Idaho - Daniel Raymond Barsness, age 75, passed away on February 6, 2026, due to complications from advanced Parkinson's disease at Edgewood Memory Care in Meridian, Idaho.

Dan was born on February 19, 1950, in McMinnville, Oregon to Ray and Bonnie Barsness. He was the first of four children. When Dan was little the family moved to Buhl, Idaho where he grew up with his siblings Karen, John and Becky. He helped his father in the family lumber yard, and spent time fishing with his grandfather, Floyd Wheeler.

In 1968, Dan graduated from Buhl High School, where he played football and saved up all his money to buy a corvette. He attended college at the College of Southern Idaho and Boise State University. Always an entrepreneur, he sold his first corvette to buy inventory, selling makeup door-to-door with his cousin Dennis. He lost his corvette but gained many life lessons, if not money, in the venture. In 1973, he married Carol Tverdy in her parents' backyard. They were married 53 years, until his passing.

In 1979, Dan and Carol had their first daughter, Sarah, who was born in Twin Falls, Idaho. Two years later, they built their house in Filer, Idaho and welcomed their second daughter, Amanda in 1981. In 1991, son Raymond Daniel "Danny" was born. In 1994, Dan and Carol had a daughter Rachel, who was born and passed away that same day.

Dan and Carol loved hospitality and hosted large gatherings to celebrate birthdays, the fourth of July and Christmas Eve, with extended family every year.

Dan started drawing at an early age and began taking private art lessons at eighteen from artist, Novella Lazaros. She taught him the basics of oil painting including color mixing, values, and composition. He later studied with other artists including Sergei Bongart and Daniel Greene. Through the years he was influenced by many artists including Sargent, Sorolla and Mucha. His love of art led him to begin his business, Quality Art and Frame, importing frames which he sold to stores and artists for decades. He traveled to Mexico, Singapore, China, Taiwan and Malaysia developing his business. Dan also followed in the footsteps of his father and invested in rental property which he ran and maintained with the help of his close friend, Gary Ledbetter.

Jesus Christ was most important to Dan and he faithfully served his Savior in life and felt deeply grateful for His saving grace. He served as an elder at Community Bible Church in Filer, Idaho and led a Bible Study there for many years. Dan's love for beauty stemmed from his love for Jesus. In his own words, Dan said:

"I am attracted to beautiful design. It doesn't matter if it is a painting, sculpture, sports car, antique or rare coin. A spring flower, butterfly, or tree leaf can be an inspiration. When creating a painting, the design must include good drawing, color harmony, balance, correct values, texture and movement. Beyond this is the personal taste of the creator. I can think of no better representation of my world view than that expressed by the Apostle Paul:"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8

This has become my goal and reward in artistic endeavor."

Dan is survived by his children; Sarah and Sam Gowin of Chattanooga, TN; Amanda and Fatagoma Silué of Boise, Idaho; Danny and Laura Barsness of Boise, Idaho; and grandchildren Jack, Grace and Lucy Gowin; Sélimin, Kassonguélé and Koundrigué Silué, and Daniel Barsness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Bonnie Barsness; and daughter Rachel Barsness.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21st, 2026, at Farmer Funeral Chapel, 130 9th Ave. N, Buhl. Pastor Scotty Brown will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dan's life.

I new Dan years ago when we were attending high school in Buhl. I was fascinated to find later of his amazing talent as an artist. He was always very friendly to me although I was a little older. His wife Carol was a friend also and I always thought her to be really special. Although I had no contact through the years I often thought of them when traveling through Filer and entered how they were. Sorry to learn of his passing,
