Richard Matthews Fowles
Feb. 18, 1930 - Nov. 26, 2023
TWIN FALLS - Richard "Dick" Matthews Fowles of Twin Falls, Idaho, passed away on November 26, 2023 at home with those he loved. Dick was born to Jenne Revere and Sarah Inez Matthews Fowles on February 18, 1930 in Evanston, Wyoming. He grew up in Oakley, Idaho and was the third of six children.
His parents and extended family owned farms in Oakley, resulting in Dick learning the value of hard work from an early age. At age twelve, Dick's father passed away. He milked cows, hoed beets and whatever else was needed to assist his mother and siblings. He passed along the same work ethic to his sons.
Dick graduated from Oakley High and was active in football and basketball. He was affectionally known by "Red" to his friends. He then attended BYU for two years prior to being called on a two-and-a-half year mission to Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Upon his return, he was drafted into the United States Army serving in Germany during the Korean War.
Dick married his high school sweetheart and pen pal, Shirley Rae Fehr, on June 12, 1953. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. They have two sons, Richard Scott (Rick) and Timothy Lee (Tim).
The majority of his professional career, Dick was a salesman in the electronics industry. He was outgoing and made friends easily. At one point in time, he owned his own service station. All who met him appreciated his sharp wit and quick sense of humor. He served in a variety of callings in his church, including two bishoprics and leadership positions in other auxiliaries.
Dick was adored by his grandchildren along with nieces and nephews, both biological and adopted. He always made them feel loved and important and was interested in what they were doing.
Dick is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter-in-law, Karin (Rick); grandchildren: Scott Fowles and Jennica (Nick) Marriott; sister, Jennette Buhler (Keith) along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jay (Loraine) and Harrison (Lela) Fowles; his sisters, Shirley (Steve) Sherwood, and LueAnn Barnard (Robert); his sons, Richard and Timothy; his grandson, Jonathan Fowles; and his great-grandson, Jude Marriott.
The family extends its appreciation to St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center, Serenity Transitional Care and Heritage Hospice for their kind and professional care.
