Carl Port Obituary

Boardman - Carl Samuel Port, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on September 27, 2025 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was born February 8, 1943 in Cleveland, a son of the late Carl and Eva (Kruger) Port. He graduated from Poland Seminary High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corp. in 1962 until 1965. He was part of the Ceremonial Guard Company, Silent Drill Platoon, and was granted security clearance to watch over John F. Kennedy when he was at Camp David. He also was present when his casket was taken to the White House after his death. Retirement was a season of joy for Carl, filled with the simple pleasures of life by the lake in Saybrook Township. Lake Erie became his sanctuary, and his pride and joy was the 1952 Cris Craft Cabin Cruiser he lovingly refurbished. That boat, like the lake itself, held countless memories of peaceful days on the water and gatherings with the people who meant the most to him. At the heart of everything was Carl's family. He cherished every moment with them, especially the adventures he shared while traveling with his grandchildren. The love he gave was always returned in kind, a beautiful, reciprocal bond that carried him through every stage of life. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 63 years, the former Judith Norris; his children, Greg (Christy) Port, Jeanne "Sue" (John) Liga, Jenny Schrum, Jill (Ken) Eshenbaugh, and Tim Port; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jeff Schrum. Friends will be received on Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman., followed immediately by a memorial Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses at Patriot Home Health Care, Hospice of the Valley by Compassus, and Visiting Angels, especially Morgan, for their compassionate care of Carl in his time of need.
