David Moncrief Obituary
On Thursday, January 2, 2025, Pastor David Moncrief, Jr. 74, heard the call of the Father as He said "Well done, good and faithful servant" and with his family at his bedside, he peacefully answered the call, as his transportation had arrived to take him home. He always said he made his reservation and got his confirmation, and all he had to do was wait on his transportation.
I waited patiently upon the Lord and He inclined unto me and heard my cry and brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and established my goings; and He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the Lord. Psalms 40:1-3 was one of his favorite scripture readings.
Pastor David (Coon) Moncrief, Jr. was born January 12, 1950, in Youngstown, Ohio. The third of ten children born to Fannie Hampton Moncrief and David Moncrief, Sr. He was a 1968 graduate of North High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1971 and transferred to the Naval Reserves where he served until 1975. He attended Youngstown State University where he took some classes in Criminal Justice after his discharge from the Navy before going to work.
He was employed for many years at Youngstown Steel Door until they closed. He then became known to folks all over Mahoning County when he was employed by Home Corp as the WIC/Milkman for many years until WIC deliveries were discontinued. He then went to work for Gateways to Better Living servicing clients until his retirement around 2006. Those who didn't know him as the milkman probably met him through his lawncare service.
David attended Triedstone Missionary Baptist all of his life and served as a Sunday School teacher, and Deacon before being ordained as a minister in 1992. He was called as Pastor of Triedstone in July of 2006. He celebrated his 18th anniversary this past July. Pastor Moncrief was a dedicated leader of Triedstone, and did not allow his physical limitations in the past few years to keep him from doing what he loved best which was preaching and teaching. He was also very passionate about his role as past president of the International Brotherhood of Christian Men and as a member of the Promise Keepers men's group which was instrumental in organizing the first Men's Rally in the Valley held at the Covelli Center in May 2008.
David leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 30 years, the former Cathy Lynn Gilliam of Youngstown, son LaShawn (Jenda) Moncrief of Hiram, Georgia, daughter LaTonya Moncrief-Young of Austell Georgia and their mother Joyce Johnson-Parks, daughter Shannon Moncrief of Youngstown and her mother Velma Blair-Crawley; a stepdaughter Charia Reid of New Jersey, stepson, Michael Reid of Florida, 12 grandchildren, Mya Moncrief, Mariah Moncrief, and David Mason Moncrief of Georgia, Kaylyn Young, Kameron Young and Khaleb Young of Georgia, Jaiden Hooker of Youngstown, Jyiqualynn, Ka'Vaun and Cirreon Carter and Zionnah and Zariah Barton of New Jersey, two sisters Catherine Atterberry of Campbell, Ohio and Freda (Jerome) Williams of Youngstown, Ohio, brother, Pellum Moncrief of Youngstown and sister-in-law, Diane Moncrief of Youngstown and host of cousins, nieces, nephews and members of the Triedstone family and friends.
