Francis Fontes Obituary

F. Anthony Fontes, 78 CAMPBELL On Saturday, May 31st, F. Anthony Fontes, fondly known by family and friends as Sonny, Tony or Papa passed away peacefully with his family surrounding him. Tony was born July 20, 1946 to Antonio V. and M. Antoinette Fontes. He grew up in Campbell where he was an altar boy, played football and tuba with the marching band in high school and at YSU. Tony was an Army reservist, a veteran and retired from General Motors after 32 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed serving others. Tony was a member of the Knights of Columbus, The American Legion Post 560 where he actively served as Commander. He coached softball and baseball for PCBA, helped cook and serve at his parish St. Lucy's in Campbell where he was involved with the Men's Society serving for the famous St. Lucy Pasta Dinners, boxing matches and the St. Lucy festivals. Tony played Morra, was an excellent bowler, a wonderful singer and loved music, his favorite song by Frank Sinatra, "My Way". Tony was a diehard sports fan and loved his Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the Buckeyes and the Guardians. Tony was a car enthusiast, enjoying summer times in Las Vegas and at Hot August Nights in Reno. If a car flew by, he likely knew the make and model. He loved spending time in Las Vegas, especially when his grandchildren were old enough to sit beside him, take pointers at the blackjack table and win, or lose some money together. Tony loved to vacation with his family: St. Maarten, Hawaii, California to see his family, Cruises to the Caribbean and Italy. He had a fondness for passing down traditions to his children and grandchildren, making wine and hot pepper relish. He did whatever his grandchildren wanted him to do, jumping in bounce houses, playing football in the front yard on Thanksgiving and the endless trips to Chuck E. Cheese and the countless board games. Tony is survived by his wife, Dolores Fontes (Carlucci) of 57 years, his children Michelle Fontes and Anthony Fontes (wife Liliana), and his beloved grandsons Benjamin, Jackson and Wiley whom he loved and was so proud of. Tony also leaves behind brothers. Anthony, Johnny and sister Rosemarie. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maxine Yost. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The Fontes family has entrusted Tony's care to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, Ohio. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2025 from 4-6 pm at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 9:30am at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish officiated by Rev. Tom Kraszewski. Entombment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Francis A. Fontes, please visit our floral store.
