John Schmidt Obituary

Boardman-It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Schmidt, 94, of Boardman. He was affectionately known as Opa (German for grandpa). John was born on Nov. 27, 1930 in NovoSelo, Yugoslavia to Anna and Ferdinand Schmidt. John immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1956, along with his mother Anna and sister JoAnn. John was employed as an auto mechanic from 1956 to 1973, then from 1973 to 1994 he was employed by General Motors, Lordstown where he worked in the skilled trades department. He retired January 1, 1995 from GM. He married the love of his life, Agnes Ference, in 1957 and raised two children: John Schmidt, and Susan Schmidt Brink. John loved dogs, especially his two beloved German Shepherds, Dino and Rusty. He and his wife traveled extensively during retirement, including Germany, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. John and Agnes also loved going to Mountaineer a few times per month and playing the slot machines. His hobbies included traveling, reading, and working on home projects. John was preceded in death by his mother Anna; sister JoAnn; and wife Agnes. John is survived by his son John; daughter, Susan; daughter- in- law, Roslyn Schmidt; son- in- law, Rich Brink; granddaughters, Alexa Schmidt and Stephanie Brink (Ryan) Moon; niece MaryAnn Malawista; and nephew, Andy De Danaan. Private services were held for the family. Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.
