WARREN - Katylu H. (Hutson) Herriman passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 with family at her bedside. She
was born May 27, 1936 in Noblesville, Indiana, the daughter of the late William T. and Bernice Wills Hutson.
Growing up in Noblesville her father was a pharmacist and operated Hutson's Pharmacy. The pharmacy was a center of social connection, and she and her brother Dick Hutson counted pills and staffed the soda fountain. Her father taught that a life of service and being personally connected is the fabric of a community. If the town's people developed illness in the middle of the night, the pharmacy opened. If people could not make the trip into town, the pharmacy delivered. She made this spirit of community service her life work.
Always a Hoosier at heart, she attended Noblesville High School and graduated from Purdue University in
1958 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and belonged to Purdue University's Gold Peppers honorary. She belonged to the President's Council at Purdue and was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association.
While at Purdue she met and later married James (Jim) Edward Herriman January 24, 1959. Katylu and Jim then resided in Williamsburg, VA while he completed his military service. They then made Warren, Ohio their lifelong home where they raised their three sons. Jim passed away in 2020 after 61 years of marriage.
Professionally, Katylu was a Case Worker for Trumbull County Department of Human Services when she retired in 1995. Prior to working for the county, she had worked for WTCSA and the YWCA where she held several positions including Director of Adult Programs and Y-Teen Director. She was nominated in 1997 to Trumbull County Women of Achievement.
She served on the Board of Directors of Beatitude House and the Board of Trustees of the YWCA where she held the office of secretary and also served as vice president of programs. She was past president of the American Association of University Women. She was a past member of Warren Panhellenic Council, Dig and Delve Garden Club, and Adelante Book Club.
As one of the founders of Someplace Safe, Trumbull County's domestic violence agency, she served on the Board of Directors for many years. She had served as the secretary of that board, and before that agency was founded, she served as secretary of the original organization known as the Domestic Violence Task Force that formed in 1978. At the time, victims of domestic violence and their children had no safety net in Trumbull County. She and others made it their mission to make a difference. In March 2025 Katylu was honored as a Founding Mother and Original Advocate.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school for many years. She served on the board of deacons and was an elder. She also served the church as a Steven Minister and was a member and past president of the Two-Sum Forum and member and past president of the Kirk Club.
Katylu was active in many community endeavors. She belonged to the Upton Association, the Trumbull County Historical Society, and had served as a volunteer at CONTACT to name a few. She also volunteered at Trumbull Mobile Meals, delivering meals well into her eighties.
She was much honored receiving a Valley Legacy Award. The awards program was founded with the purpose of honoring members of the Mahoning Valley who believe legacies are meant to be lived, not just left. Her hobbies included reading, traveling, swimming, and volunteering. After retirement Jim and Katylu embraced travel at one point taking a monthslong cross country trip. Ultimately, they would visit all 50 states and many of the National Parks. She was a sports enthusiast and loved basketball. She cheered Purdue all of her life and was thrilled by the growth of women's sports.
Her greatest joy in life was her family and the many friendships she cherished over the years. She enjoyed returning to Indiana to visit relatives. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren attending sports games, graduations, and holiday gatherings. One of her favorite events was the Hutson family reunion that she attended in Alabama earlier this year. She was adept at staying in contact with high school classmates and friends from Purdue.
A celebration of her life will be at First Presbyterian Church 256 Mahoning Avenue, Warren Ohio on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Calling hours begin at 9 am with services immediately following at 11 am. The service will be streamed online and can be viewed at the church's website: facebook.com/fpcwarren.
