Lawrence Mate Obituary
YOUNGSTOWN – Lawrence E. "Larry" Mate, 62, of Youngstown passed away Tuesday morning, October 7, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Health Center with his loving family by his side.
Larry was born in Painesville Thursday, August 1, 1963, a son of David Mate and Carol Haffa and moved to the Youngstown community as a young child.
He was a 1982 graduate of The Rayen School, receiving his diploma from the Choffin Career Center where he studied culinary arts. Larry worked for a brief time at the 76 Truck Stop and later spent 20 years at floor care company. For the past two decades, he was employed in the maintenance department at Greenbrier Health Care Center, where he was known for his hard work, reliability, and friendly spirit.
In his leisure time, Larry enjoyed drawing, building model cars, collecting antiques, and listening to music. He had a creative soul and a deep appreciation for the details in both art and life,
Larry leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Carol Perkins of Youngstown; children, Dana Mate and Andrew Mate both of Struthers; Kevin Mate and Lawrence Mate, Jr, both of Youngstown; siblings, Daniel Mate,, John Mate, Damon Perkins, Emmett Perkins, Jr; and Robyn (Michael) Carter all of Youngstown; his loving companion, Dawn; and a stepson, Sean Ripple and a granddaughter, Leilah Mate. Also cherishing his memory are his Aunt Margaret McCoy; his aunt and uncle Jerry and Judy Ladany; his godparents, Robert and Marilyn Haffa; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his father, Larry was preceded in death by his stepfather, Emmett Perkins, an infant brother, David William Mate, grandparents, Andrew and Mary Mate and Lillian and Milton Haffa, Uncle Donald Haffa, Uncle Kenny McCoy, and Aunt Betty (Howard) Bushnell.
The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, October 18, 2025 at The McCauley Funeral Home from Noon to 2 pm will a service to immediately follow.
