AUSTINTOWN — Mary Modarelli, 103, formerly of Euclid Blvd., Liberty Township, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, March 27, 2026, at Aventura at Humility House, after a long and fulfilling life.
Mary was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late John and Mary Plesac Bada, and came to the Youngstown area as a young child, where she would remain a lifelong resident.
She was a 1941 graduate of Girard High School and worked as a secretary in a law office for eight years before taking the position of office manager at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown, where she dedicated more than 30 years until her retirement.
Mary was a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Church. She had a lifelong passion for bowling and participated in numerous leagues throughout the years. Her love of the sport extended beyond competition, as she served as secretary of the Youngstown Women’s Bowling Association for 12 years. In recognition of her dedication, she was granted a Life Membership in the YWBA in 1979, received a permanent membership in the Women’s International Bowling Congress that same year, and was inducted into the YWBA Hall of Fame in 1982. Mary’s many accomplishments were further honored with her induction into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.
In addition to her many interests, Mary generously gave of her time as a volunteer in the gift shop at Northside Hospital in Youngstown for 25 years, where she formed many lasting friendships.
Mary is survived by her sister, Virginia Sandberg of Boardman; her sister-in-law, Nada Bada of Austintown, who lovingly cared for her; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Modarelli; her son, Nicholas Modarelli; six brothers, Frank, John, Joseph, Steve, Michael and George Bada; and three sisters, Catherine, Lillian May and Anna.
Family and friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.
Interment will follow at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown, where Mary will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
In lieu of flowers, Mary’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1125 Turin St., Youngstown, OH 44510.
