Odessa Smith Obituary
Odessa Smith peacefully entered eternity on October 29, 2025, in the comfort of her residence surrounded by her loved ones. Born Odessa Mildred Coleman in Youngstown, Ohio, on May 5, 1930, she was the youngest daughter of Stephen Coleman and Odessa Coleman (née Barnett). Odessa lived a life filled with love, music, and unwavering faith.
Odessa proudly graduated from The Rayen School in 1948, a milestone that marked the beginning of a life dedicated to nurturing her family and community. From an early age, she developed a passion for music that would accompany her throughout her life.
As a gifted pianist and organist, she brought joy to the congregants at Hillman Avenue Church of Christ and later at Eastside Church of Christ, where she faithfully served, sharing her musical gift and ensuring that hymns resonated in the hearts of all who attended. Faith was an integral part of Odessa's life witnessed in her regular participation and assistance with church matters throughout the week.
Her vibrant spirit shone brightly through her love of fashion; she took great pride in dressing "sharp," bringing elegance wherever she went. She had an affinity for shades of purple hues which reflected both her regal and passionate nature. Odessa had a deep appreciation for hosting holiday celebrations, cooking heartwarming meals that brought family and friends together, fostering an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness.
In her quiet moments, Odessa found joy in her favorite daytime soap operas and game shows, always embracing life's simple pleasures. To Odessa, these daily experiences were the defining moments of a good day! Odessa's compassionate demeanor and genuine love for others will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A dedicated mother and grandmother, Odessa leaves behind a cherished legacy through her daughter, Gwendolyn Patterson, and her grandchildren: Terence Gamble, Keisha Williams, Michelle Grissett, James Holmes Jr., Tiffany Patterson, John Patterson IV, Tracy Patterson, Sheila Patterson, and Tonia Whitfield. She also adored her great-grandchildren: Tera-Jae' Gamble, Benjamin Williams, Derrick Wallace Jr., Kourtnee Wallace, Peyton Holmes, and Sherelle Patterson, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her memory will also remain vibrant within her goddaughter Lisa Gayle and a large host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
As Odessa's faith became sight, she was reunited with her parents; children John Smith III, Michele Holmes (née Patterson), Lawrence Smith, and Willis Smith; siblings Stevana Coleman, Mary Agnes Coleman and Clarence Coleman, each who preceded her in death. Odessa will be both missed and celebrated dearly by her loved ones, who all admire the full life she lived.
The Smith Family wishes to express its tremendous appreciation for the loving support and palliative care provided by Hospice of the Valley which afforded dignity to Odessa in her transition.
Family and friends will gather and pay their respects in celebration of the remarkable life of Odessa Mildred Smith, a shining light in our lives who will forever reside in our hearts. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Belmont Park Cemetery, 3346 Belmont Ave, Youngstown, with Minister Nick Kelson presiding.
