Joan Maple Hornecker, 87, passed away on August 28, 2022, in Bend, Oregon, her eldest son by her side.

On October 28, 1934, Joan was born in Baker, Oregon, the eldest child of James and Claire Maple, residents of John Day. In her youth, Joan enjoyed spending time on the ranch with her grandmother Margaret Oliver making quilts and riding horses. Later, Joan attended Providence School of Nursing serving as a student nurse at hospitals in Portland. Joan worked for Gerry Frank as an event coordinator, planning fashion shows for Portland's department store Meier & Frank. Joan was known as the first female, daily variety show host in Medford, Oregon for the TV show Woman's World (KOBI), and later Hi Noon/Hi Joan (KTVL). Guests included: The Organic Gardener, Jill St. John, The Fifth Dimension and Mickey Mouse. Joan also found time to work as the Marketing Director at Madison House in Medford, Ore.

To add to her diverse career, she was an accomplished businesswoman obtaining her real estate license, owning a grocery store and an antique shop. She loved skiing, gardening, and golfing. She will be remembered for her determination, independence, and in her love of Christ exemplified by her helping friends and neighbors.

Joan is preceded in death by her father and mother, James and Claire Maple; brothers Thomas and John Maple; and daughter Samantha Ricketts Watnes. She is survived by her brother James F. Maple of John Day, her sister Mary Farmer of Mesa, Arizona; her children Mike (Gina) Ricketts, Redmond, OR; Kevin (Theresa) Ricketts, Klamath Falls; Mary (John) Seifert, Livingston, MT; Clare (John) Jaramillo, Tualatin, OR; Matt (Desiree) Ricketts, Livingston, MT; grandchildren Jordan, Ian, Jamica, Silbestre, Bryan, Kyle, Lindsey, Katie, Olivia, Matthew, Audrey, Andrea, Alexandra, Macy, Ladan, Jakim, Josh, and Kelsey; and great grandchildren Lauren, Nate, and Vincent.

A public funeral service will be held September 17 at 1 pm at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in John Day, OR.
