Richard Schroeder Obituary

Richard R. Schroeder

We lost a treasured soul, Richard R. Schroeder on June 12, 2009 in Medford, Ore. He was born Jan. 6, 1917 in New England, N.D. Heaven will be a sweeter place as he joins his eleven siblings.

Dick is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis; his cherished daughter, Kathy Tremain, of Salem, Ore.; two grandsons, Ron Tremain, of Hood River, Ore. and Sonny Tremain, of Springfield, Ore.; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In 1938, Dick enlisted in the Marine Corps, spending a year and a half in China with the 4th Marines 2nd Battalion. At the fall of Corregidor he became a Japanese Prisoner of War, spending three and a half years in POW camps in the Philippines and Mukden, Manchuria.

Dick was a wonderful husband and father, and an avid outdoorsman. He was a very strong, gentle soul. Many sought his advice.

Dick was a lifetime member of the American Prisoners of War, Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, DAV, VFW, Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge.

The graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point, OR

In lieu of flowers the family asks you honor Dick's memory by sending donations to the Military Ex-Prisoners of War Foundation, Treasurer: Doris Dallas, 916 Bingham Drive, Fayetteville, NC 27803 or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland, Ore.

You were such a big part of our lives as we were growing up, & I am so greatful. Mom would babysit Kathy, & I remember the times that you would bring us soda pop when you would come to take Kathy home. We didn't get much soda pop back then; so it was such a treat for us kids. But, that was the way you were, doing for and thinking of others. I love & miss you so much.
