I don’t normally post stuff like this. I do think it helps to reflect. For two brothers that relationship is often filled will first experiences. Ryan and I were polar opposites. But.. a brothers bond is just that. You become best friends; you fight, cry, wrestle, talk, tease, test, fight more, battle, imagine, dream, play, get in trouble, protect, foster each others competitive nature, yell, and fight more!

Ryan and I did all those things. Our childhood was amazing. Full of adventure and imagining what we could get into next. Whether playing football against each other in a snow storm, or riding bikes with Peter Iverson, wrestling, swimming, racing each other, or whitewater rafting with Dad.

He was always the responsible one of us and seemed to have the correct voice of reason. I was the opposite, and tested my boundaries, dared to do what we shouldn’t. Even though he would most often object, he was right behind me walking into whatever adventure or danger I dreamed up, often being on the losing end and getting hurt. He never wavered and followed me no matter what. I guess that’s the good and bad of being his big brother.

I reflect on his brilliance! He was quick witted. Always joking. His love for music, Chicago Bears, his dogs, his core group of friend (that he had since elementary school). He loved his three boys, and his nieces. He loved to teach. Loved mathematics and the outdoors. Loved to try different beer.

Ryan was unique and was never afraid to dive into a deep philosophical conversation. His students will miss him!

If you knew him you are lucky; if you met him, you never forgot! He will always be the Nitty Gritty, or as he renamed himself “Doc Nitty.”

My name is Minh Nguyen, Ryan colleague at Bellevue College. Ryan's passed away has left us in shock and sadness. In the morning of Wednesday, November 2, Ryan was walking behind me and greeting me, "Hi Minh, how are you?" I turned around and here was Ryan. I told him, "I am so glad to see you Ryan after more than 2 years." We both smiled, then Ryan turned right walked toward his classroom, and I turned left walked into the Science Division office. I had never thought that was my last time to see and talk to Ryan. Ryan always stands up to support Math Department and his colleagues. He also has a sense of humor. On the Halloween day of his first year at BC, I saw Ryan walked into L200 with a woman long dress, a purse and dressy high heels that he borrowed from his wife, and he put a red lipstick and a curly wig. Jan at the Science office and I both enjoyed looking at him and we laughed.

It is so sad to hear the news.

My condolences to his family and his children. Rest in peace, Ryan.
