Stephen Tibbitts Obituary

Stephen 'Cap' Tibbitts

January 12, 1947 -

August 10, 2022

A bonsai artist, an avid gardener, a dog lover, a compassionate friend, and most of all a beloved husband and father, Stephen 'Cap' Tibbitts quietly left this life at his home in Beloit, Wisconsin on August 10, 2022. He is remembered for his generosity of spirit, keen wit, and willingness to always be there for those he loved.

Born on January 12, 1947, in Moab, Utah, to Bob and Hallie Tibbitts, he achieved his dream of being a psychologist, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Montana. He was devoted to helping people navigate the most difficult times in their lives and learning to live with mental illness. He lived with Type I Diabetes nearly all his life but refused to allow it to define him. He enjoyed snorkeling, square dancing and ballroom dancing, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Tibbitts, his children Amy Tibbitts and her husband, Joshua Moore, and Robert Tibbitts and his wife Kristie Tibbitts, and his five grandchildren, Emma, Luke, Noah, Eero, and Tristan. He is also mourned by his siblings, Bob Tibbitts, Nancy Inskeep, Susan Swazey, and Jennifer Tibbitts, as well as by his many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins. We cast a spell of protection over him as he passes from this realm to the next.

A memorial service will be planned for some time next year.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Cap truly was a Bonsai artist. He just stood by my side a few months ago advising me on how to prune my 30 year old bonsai. I will miss his knowledge. He will be missed at Rock River Bonsai Society.

I knew Cap through the Rock River Bonsai Society, he was incredibly knowledgeable about the art of bonsai and a great and friendly instructor. My condolences.
