David Dyer Obituary

ST. ALBANS -- David S. Dyer, 60, passed away March 9, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born March 5, 1949, in Hartland, a son of Stanley H. and Patricia (Heath) Dyer. David married Deborah Robertson in 1999 in St. Albans with their beloved black Lab Tasha by their side. He attended Palmyra schools and graduated from Hartland Academy in 1967. After graduation Dave joined the Army Reserve in Dexter and was active from 1968 to 1974. He served as town selectman in Palmyra and coached many Little League and basketball teams. He was a past master of the Meridian Splendor Lodge 49 A.F. & A.M. in Newport and was instrumental in building the new lodge. From 1976 to 2000, Dave worked as an engineering consultant for Kleinschmidt & Dutting in Pittsfield, Acheron Engineering in Newport, Professional Survey & Engineering and Dirigo Engineering in Waterville.

After working for others for many years, Dave and Debbie started St. Albans Stove Shop out of their garage in St. Albans and soon purchased a larger location on U.S. Route 2 in Palmyra where the business still thrives. He was very proud of the business that they worked hard to build and knew success was directly related to great customer service.

For the last few years, Dave enjoyed spending his winters in the warmth and the sun of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. Once home from Florida he would be anxious to spend spring, summer and fall at Elm Pond with Deb and Tasha at "Dyer Straits," the camp he built with his son, brother and many friends in T4-R16. He loved fishing and was always in search of the perfect rod and reel combination. In 2008, Dave got a moose permit for the first time and was happy to share the very successful hunt with his grandsons, son, brother and friends.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Dyer of Corinna; his wife of nine years, Deborah of St. Albans; two children, Darrin and his wife, Kathy Dyer, of Palmyra and Deanna and her husband, Mitchell Harris, of Blaine; a brother, Dennis and his wife, Deborah Dyer, of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister, Vicki (Dyer) and her husband, Mark Parker, of Corinna; four grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Ashlee and Adrienne; several beloved nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where a Masonic service will take place at 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating.

Spring burial will be in the family lot, Palmyra Village Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Those who wish may sign an online guest register and leave written tributes at www. CrosbyNeal.com.

Debbie,
So sorry to hear about Dave. We had so many great times working together at Kleinschmitd in the 80's. I'll never forget the time Dave, Mike folsom, and Gary Violette returned from doing a local stream bed survey. They had manage to recover a chash register that had been stolen from the mobile station in Newport. What a laugh well all had! Deb, if you need anything, we're just up the road. Doug and Renea

To My Family:

We have suffered an insurmountable loss this week; a truly wonderful man whom so many people respected and loved. Although many miles separate us, please know that I am thinking of you all during this very difficult time. My only solace is that I was able to see my uncle this past weekend; albeit briefly. I will hold you all close to my heart and please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Dyer Family:

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord

My heart and prayers are with you all in this time of great sorrow. May the Lord give you strength and comfort.

Deanna and Darrin,
After calling you both last night, I found myself hearing your father's great laugh over some story someone had told (for some reason the big plank table at 2nd Machias lake was where he was sitting, but we were so young - how can I remember that?)...it is what I will remember most about him, the smiles and laughs whenever I was home and stopped to say hi. We will all miss him and Dennis and I send much love to you all. Please know that we are there with you in spirit, even though we are continents away.
Lots of love, Donnette

Debbie,
I am so sorry about Dave. He always treated me so very well whenever we got together. He always had an open door for me no matter when I arrived in town or what time I may have called. I will remember our conversations around your kitchen table and him explaining to me about how to cook beer butt chicken. It was one of the funniest things I have ever heard of, but it makes for some great chicken. It is the little things that leaves the biggest memories. I will miss him greatly. When things get settled down please call me. I love you Debba! Love your sister, Sarah
