Edward was born on April 22, 1922, in Hackensack, N.J., to Edward Murphy and Margaret (Beine) Murphy. He enlisted and served in the Navy. During this time he met his beloved wife, Lucille Priebe. Lucille and Edward married in Amityville, N.Y., on April 8, 1944. Also in 1944, he began his illustrious career at Grumman Aerospace Corporation. His career at Grumman spanned 43 stellar years. He was an engineer on many of our nation's finest jets and space exploration vehicles, including the F-14 Tomcat, A-6 Intruder, the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) used on the Apollo space missions, the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs. He received many accolades and awards for his efforts, and traveled the country to liaison with the Navy and NASA .
Lucille and Edward moved to Massapequa, N.Y., in 1953. During this time they came into the Catholic Church and began their family of six children. Edward was a member of Knights of Columbus, served as a Boy Scout Troop leader, and with other fraternal organizations. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family. Some favorite family pastimes were spending the day at Jones or Tobay beach, hiking the mountains of upstate New York, visiting the lighthouses, arboretums and sanctuaries of the area, and later vacations to visit family in Maine. He was an accomplished photographer and received dozens of awards for his work. He was a caring and creative man, whether making animal-shaped pancakes for his children or hand-coloring their Easter eggs.
Edward retired from Grumman in 1987. He and Lucille moved to Madison in 1994. They built a home and surrounded it with a lovely garden as they always had at their home in Massapequa. Edward loved to spend time at his daughter's house on Lake Wesserunset, or enjoy lunch with Lucille on the banks of the Kennebec River. He loved trips to the coast, and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Madison and volunteered at St. Anthony's Soup Kitchen in Skowhegan.
Edward was a beloved and devoted husband and father, whose life's work was ensuring that his family was well cared for. He is survived by and will be missed by his treasured wife of 66 years, Lucille Murphy of Madison; his children, daughter Mary Murphy; son Edward Christopher Murphy and his wife, Norma, of San Diego; daughter Michaela "Kala" Marie Murphy of Madison; daughter Beth Ann Swain and her husband, Shaun, of Madison; and his twin daughters Maura Ann Murphy and Celia Ann Murphy of Madison. He will be remembered by his grandson, Jonathan Saunders Swain and his wife, Larissa, of Utah, and special family members. The family would like to convey special appreciation to the caring team that made it possible for Edward to spend his final days in the comfort of his home: Elder Independence of Maine, Mainely Elder Care, Beacon Hospice, Rachel Krajewski, Rachel George, Jan Paine, and the many other devoted angels on earth who cared for Ed, as well as the Eucharistic ministers of St. Sebastian Catholic Church.
Visitation hours are between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A Mass of Christian burial will be held as a celebration of his life at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Saint Sebastian Catholic Church on Main Street in Madison.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Sebastian Church, 161 Main St., Madison, ME 04950, or Hospice Volunteers of Somerset County, P.O. Box 3069, Skowhegan, ME 04976.

Dear Dad,
Happy 91st Birthday and 4th Anniversary in Heaven. We all miss you very much, every day.
We'll be looking skyward tonight, as the Lyrid meteor shower puts on a display. God's way of lighting sparklers for your birthday. : )
You were born during the Lyrid meteor shower.
Mom was born during the Perseid meteor shower.
It could be said that your love was written in the stars.
And although you are now amongst those stars
It doesn't diminish your love,
which transcends these mere mortal boundaries.
To our family's brightest star, with all my love always,
Celia

Happy Veteran's Day, Dad, to my favorite Veteran of all. You are my hero, my inspiration, and the one who gives me the drive to keep going. I miss you so very much, that doesn't diminish. Time heals a bit here and there, but doesn't release the "missing you" part. But then you left such a huge heartprint on this world, it would take more than leaving this earth to erase that. You are always in my heart, Dad. May God Always Bless and Keep You. I Love You Always, your light haired girl.. Celia xox

An Irish Funeral Prayer
Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.
(Read aloud after funeral at family gathering)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all!! Your father was an exceptional man. The honor he brought to his family and career is ever so present in his children.
I asked Paul what his fondest memory was of your father. He thoughtfully described as he was watching the lunar landing how proud he was to know his Uncle Murph had a part in it. God Speed, Uncle Murph!

Eulogy for Edward J. Murphy
Funeral Mass for Edward J. Murphy
Saturday, February 27, 2010
St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Madison Maine
I rise to honor Edward Joseph Murphy, a good man with a kind heart, who I am proud to have known and privileged to have had as my father.
He was called upon to endure so much, and did so with courage, dignity, grace and a smile. That smile.
My father was the personification of the greatest generation. He served his country and put his family first. He provided for his beloved wife of 66 years, Lucille, and his six children, a family of eight. He worked tirelessly at home, at work, at church and in the community.
My father worked on creating the vehicle that landed on the moon and the fastest jets the world has ever known. When there was a problem in Palmdale or Texas, my father got on a plane and solved it.
He arrived home from work punctually each day to play with us, take us to the beach, make up stories to tell us and songs to sing us, and help us with our homework and projects.
My father took us to mountains, lakes and oceans. He loved Southern California, and my brother and I would look forward to his visits.
I will always remember the twinkle in his eye, his smile, his laugh, his humor, his patience, his caring and kindness, his sound advice, and his understanding and support.
We knew how much he loved us and how proud he was of us. One of the best parts of any accomplishment or achievement was telling my father, because I knew how proud and happy he was. For our achievements, our lives, and all we had become.
Our greatest gift. Our father.
A good man with a kind heart.
Dad, thank you for showing me how to live with a kind, open and loving heart, a smile, good cheer, a helping hand and words of encouragement. That is all I can ever hope to be.
Thank you for being my father.
I love you dad.
I hope we will meet again.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER
He stands behind his camera,
A gaggle of children waiting patiently.
“Smile”, he says.
They hold their smiles, giggling all the while
through their grins.
He waits for the perfect moment—The perfect picture.
Focusing, adjusting lenses, calculating apertures…
His children, growing impishly restless
Wonder why he doesn’t just snap the photo.
They don’t realize that he wants
nothing less than perfection.
For he knows how these precious, priceless times
Will likely fade from grown memories.
Those colorful instances that you assume
will be remembered for all time
have a curious way
of fading to black and white.
He takes the picture.
You look back upon these images,
Grateful to have a testament of those times together.
And although our recollections, and the photos as well have slightly faded,
these remembrances have a forgiving way of spiriting us back.
They remind us of our days together, and we appreciate now that he put forth such care.
These paper portraits are a mere glimpse
at what he saw through his lens.
His wife’s smile as she cradles her newborn.
The glee of his children blowing out their birthday candles.
The essence and soul of these moments.
Forever captured and chronicled for us to look back upon.
Thanks to this family’s historian.
This husband.
This father.
This photographer.

My Wonderful Dad

February 26, 2010
Remembering my Dad- my father, my friend, my treasured, wonderful Poppadoodles.
?He forever holds a piece of my heart which no one on earth will ever access, because it belongs to him alone. His sweet, gentle spirit has been such a source of comfort and strength throughout my life; an inspiration and confirmation that we can love lavishly, selflessly, immeasurably. His vast intelligence was balanced by perfect humility. His faith was pure and unquestioning. My father loved God, relied on the Holy Spirit and was always relay to give a “Hallelujah” to Jesus.
The strength dad showed under adversity was a living illustration of rising about circumstances and leaning on God for strength and provision. I feel endlessly thankful that I can close my eyes and see his precious face, twinkling blue eyes and beautiful smile. To look into his eyes and see complete adoration is a gift that few on this earth have the privilege to experience, but with my dad it was a daily gift.
When I kissed my father I would tell him he was the best dad in the world, and due to his recent dementia, it was always as if he was hearing it for the first time. He would reply, “Oh, Yeah? Really?”. His eyes would sparkle with delight and surprise.
I whispered those words into his ear as I tended to him in the early morning of his passing. He was unresponsive at the time, but when he heard those words he opened his eyes and smiled widely and responded, “Oh, Yeah? Really?”, leaving me with the treasure of knowing his last words to me were borne out of absolute delight. I said “Yes you really are!”, kissing him on the forehead as he closed his eyes.
Within 12 hours dad was standing in the presence of God, who I thank liberally for giving me my beloved dad. Dad is experiencing no more pain, no more sorrow, dwelling in perfect peace until we meet again sharing ultimate joy for all of eternity.
His loving daughter,
Beth Murphy Swain
