Hubert Potter Obituary

WHITEFIELD -- Hubert Knox Potter, age 75, of Whitefield passed away unexpectedly at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006. Many immediate family members were able to be by his side when he left us for his next "road trip" to rejoin his parents, brothers and sisters.

Hubert, born April 24, 1931, in Mount Vernon, was the youngest son of Woodford J. and L. Marie (Cole) Potter. He grew up in the Mount Vernon and Readfield area, where he has many close friends and family members.

At 18, Hubert served his country in the Army during the Korean War.

After his service, he worked for Buck Ingham and Dresseley's Garage (currently Bob Barrows Chevrolet) in Winthrop. In 1968, Hubert began a new job working at the maine state police garage. He took pride maintaining the State Police cruisers and knew that the safety of the state police troopers partly depended on their vehicles. He made many friends in the state police family by the time he retired in 1988 and earned the respect of all he worked with.

Proud to be a Mason of the Lafayette Lodge, Hubie recently celebrated his fifty-year membership.

Hubert loved automobiles and was a member of MOALS antique car club. He enjoyed sharing his love of cars with close friends Melvin and Beacy Boyle. Wherever Hubie went, he made friends with his kind, gentle nature and sense of humor.

Hubie was predeceased by his first wife, Emily (Ferguson) Potter. They were married for 37 years and lived in Augusta while raising two children, Tonya Potter Ballard and Dorian Potter. He was also predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Phyllis Potter Weston, Trudy Brooks and Maybelle Potter Cates; his brothers, Henry and Donald Potter; and his brothers-in-law, Prescott Wight Jr., Clyde Weston Sr., Charles Brooks and Gleason Cates.

Hubert is survived by his wife, Irene, daughter Tonya Ballard and her husband, Thomas, son Dorian Potter, stepson Wayne Whitman and his wife, Maureen; grandchildren Michael and Meghan Ballard, Laura, Jacob, Samuel and Hannah Whitman; and brother, Loren "Buster" Potter. Many nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law Miriam, Evelyn and Midge also survive him.

Friends may visit from 1-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Plummer Funeral Home, 983 Ridge Road, Windsor. Immediately following viewing time, a service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Donations in Hubert's memory may be made to Maine State Troopers Scholarship Fund, 28 Meadow Road, Augusta, ME 04330.

Condolences to the family may be expressed via the funeral home Web site at www.plummerfh.com.

Ah, I remember well the fond memories of Hubert growing up at Kents Hill and the times associated with all the Potter children. What an awesome, loving family all the Potter's were. Hubert will sadly be missed, he was one great human being with lots of love, laughter and one who loved life and those who surrounded him. Our prayers and sympathy to Hubert's survivors.

I was one of those young troopers that Hubie helped to keep safe and will never forget that. I always remember in the trips to the garage the twinkle in his eye and his endless pranks but always a gentleman. My sympathy and prayers to all of Hubies family.
