John was born in Providence, R.I., on June 8, 1925. He was the only son of Scottish immigrants, John Cameron Sr. and Isabella Gibbs Cameron, who settled in Quincy, Mass., where John Jr. spent most of his childhood. The family moved to the Augusta area where John completed his senior year of high school at Cony High School in 1943. Like many young men of the time, John enlisted in the Army Air Forces upon graduation to serve his country during World War II. After the war, he continued to serve his country in the Air National Guard for more than 25 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He completed training as a chiropractor at the Lincoln School of Chiropractic in Indianapolis, Ind., and returned to Augusta to practice chiropractic. John completed his professional career as an employee of the state of Maine Department of Health Engineering where he was a radiologic monitoring specialist and retired in 1985.
John was a gifted athlete. He excelled at football at Cony High School and later successfully played racketball and tennis in competition. But his true love was the game of golf. John was an active member of the Augusta Country Club for many years and was very proud to achieve a single-digit handicap in his golfing career.
John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda, the love of his life; and his beloved dog, Amos. He is also survived by four children, Jack Cameron and his wife, Christine, of Manchester, Ann Cameron-Gannett, of Manchester, Mark Cameron and his wife, Linda, of Augusta, and Bruce Cameron, of Manchester. John was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Derek Gannett and his wife, Holly, of Manchester, Jeremy Cameron and his wife, Andrea, of Augusta, Jennifer Cameron-Clarkson and her husband, Kaleem, of Atlanta, Ga., Holly Cameron-Daigle and her husband, Nick, of Chelsea, and Craig Cameron, of Manchester. John was also a proud great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Tommy Gannett, Chloe Cameron and Addison Daigle.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lisa Clarcq for her never-ending support and compassion, and the staff at the Alfond Center for Cancer Care.
John's life will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Augusta Country Club, U.S. Route 202, Manchester. Burial will be at a later date in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.

"Doc" was someone that you always enjoyed; his laughter seemed contagious. Having grown up on the same street with his parents, I knew him starting when I was a child, and he always had a kind word. My thoughts are with Linda and with Jack, Mark, Ann, and Bruce. I am glad to have shared time with "Doc."

Linda, You and John taught me a lot about what relationships can be. John was a great man, and a funny guy. I am glad you found him, but the world will be emptier because of his absence.

I'm so sorry to hear of John's passing. He used to come into the store in Readfield when I worked there and after that I would run into him at the post office. He was always so friendly and it was a pleasure to see his smiling face. My condolences to his family.
