LAWRENCE "MIKE" RONAN
1926 - 2016
WINSLOW - Lawrence "Mike" Ronan, 89, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at Lakewood Continuing Care in Waterville. Mike was born on Dec. 17, 1926, in Brewer. He was the son of Gordon T. Ronan, Orono, and Bernice Moore Ronan, Milford.
Mike attended Orono High School and graduated from Winslow High School, Class of 1945.
He was a member of the U.S. army from July 1945 to April 1947. He trained at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, S.C., served in Italy as Sgt. Major at headquarters in the 6688th Prisoner of War Administrative Company, returned to the United States on Feb. 27, 1947, and received an honorable discharge on April 19, 1947.
On May 30, 1949, he married Jacqueline Annette Michaud at the Sacred Heart Church in Waterville with the Rev. Albert Long officiating.
He is survived by two sons: David M. Ronan and his wife Suzanne of Oakland, and Gary T.
Ronan and his partner Binh Tran of Canton, Mass.; four grandchildren: Cheri Ronan of Oakland and Jonathan Ronan and wife Alyza of Waterville, Amanda Ronan and husband Christopher Specht of Austin, Texas, and Bethany Rowbottom and husband David of Martinsville, N.J.; and three great-grandchildren: Izabella and Christopher Ronan of Waterville, and Jack Rowbottom of Martinsville, N.J.; cousins Mary Ellen Perry and Sheila Graham of Bangor, Connie Demers of Scarborough, and Carol Ronan of Panama City, Fla.; Bill Hanscom of Belvidere, N.J.; and Judy Farrell of Dorchester, Mass.
Mike was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jacqueline Ronan; his parents, Gordon and Bernice Ronan; in-laws Frank and Mary Anne Michaud; two uncles, Clayton Ronan of Florida and Leslie Graham of Bangor; three aunts, Cynthia Ronan of Florida, Marion Graham of Bangor, and Kate Mooney of Portland; grandparents; and several cousins.
He was employed at Hollingsworth and Whitney (Scott Paper Company) in Winslow in the payroll department for 41 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of American Legion Post #5; life member of VFW Post #8835 and served on the House Committee, as a trustee, and as lounge manager; lifetime member of the Taconnet Federal Credit Union, serving as the first member on the Credit Committee when the credit union was first founded; served on the Board of Directors for 20 years; and was chairman of the Supervisory Committee.
Mike enjoyed camping for many years at Green Valley Campground in Vassalboro, and fishing with the members of the "OLD" Fisherman's Association of Reel Trollers; outdoor lawn and landscaping around his home; Friday breakfasts with some of his high school classmates and friends; and traveling to Aruba, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and Florida.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Roland Knausenberger and his staff for their years of continuous care; June Marshall for her years of personal home care and wonderful friendship; and to the staff at Lakewood Continuing Care for their outstanding detail and attention to his personal needs.
Visiting hours will be held at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville on Monday, Feb. 29, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 26 Monument St., Winslow. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville, in the spring.
