Levi Albair Obituary

1921-2014

OAKLAND - Levi W. Albair, 92, died Monday. March 31, 2014 at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Dover-Foxcroft on Sept. 27, 1921, the son of John and Marie (Sullivan) Albert. Levi was a sergeant in the Army, serving in Scotland, England, France and Germany. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Battle Star and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Levi worked a short time at Scott Paper Co. in Winslow, was employed by L.N. Violette Co., and retired as a custodian for the Oakland school district. He also owned and operated the family chicken farm in Oakland and worked in the woods.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Augusta. He loved to garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with anyone that needed some. While at the nursing home in Augusta, he enjoyed playing beano.

Levi was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Mona (Higgins) Albair; a great-grandson, Cody Albair; brothers Joseph Albair, John Albert and James Albert; and his son-in-law, Ed Hartsgrove. Surviving are his six children, Levi "Sonny" Albair Jr., and wife Lorraine, of Corinna, Constance Hartsgrove, of Oakland, Bruce Albair, of Oakland, Ronald Albair and wife Nettie, of Oakland, Debra Koss, of Pittsfield, and Trudy Allbair, of Oakland; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Silver Street, Waterville. Committal prayers with military honors, followed by burial at 1 p.m. at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Avenue in Augusta. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Oakland; www.wheelerfh.com.
