Marlene Lorna (Burkart) Harris
1942 - 2017
SPRING GROVE, Pa. - Marlene Lorna (Burkart) Harris 75, of Spring Grove, Pa., passed away peacefully on May 4, 2017, at Manor Care North in York, Pa. after a sudden illness. She was born in Skowhegan on Jan 6, 1942, daughter of the late Carl and Virginia Burkhart.
She was a graduate of Skowhegan Area High School class of 1960. Marlene was crowned Miss Maine Photographer in May 1960 and went on to be crowned Miss New England Professional Photographer Queen later that same year. She was also a model for the Eastman Kodak Company.
Marlene loved to dance since childhood. After graduation she went on to become a dance teacher at the Vivian Foy Dance Studio and later opened her own dance school.
She married Jeff Harris in December of 1965 and had two children, Matthew and Gretchen. She was an active member of the Skowhegan congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for 36 years, and then a member of the Spring Grove, Pa. congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for the last seven years.
Marlene not only loved dancing, but also loved a variety of crafts, jewelry making, sewing, crocheting, knitting and cooking. She was most happy when she was able to spend time with her family, especially her granddaughter Savanah.
She is survived by her two children, Matthew Eric Harris and his wife Melissa of Hanover, Pa. and Gretchen Lee Stevens and her husband Jonathan of Middleboro, Mass. She has one granddaughter Savanah Paige Harris, daughter of Matthew and Melissa; a brother Willam Burkhart of Skowhegan; and countless nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Carl and Virginia Burkhart of Canaan; a brother Carl "Buckey" Burkhart of Skowhegan; and her husband Jeff Harris also of Skowhegan.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the nursing staff of the Oncology Unit at York Hospital for the exceptional care and comfort they gave Marlene in the final days of her life.
There will be no visiting hours
A memorial service will be held on May 20, 2017, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1252 Lakewood Rd., Madison, ME at 3:00 pm. with Richard Bassett of Skowhegan officiating.
