FARMINGTON - Mary Louise Potter, 83, of Farmington, died peacefully with her daughter by her side on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at the Sandy River Center in Farmington.
Mary was born on Dec. 8, 1932, the only child of William and Eva (McFadden) Cowen. She grew up on a farm in Sidney, where her parents operated a boarding home for people with disabilities. She graduated from Messalonskee High School and went on to attend secretarial school in Augusta. On June 27, 1952, she married Arthur Potter. While Arthur was stationed with the Army in Germany, Mary moved overseas with their oldest daughter, Patricia, before being transferred to Oklahoma.
Upon her parents retirement, Mary and Arthur took over the boarding home in Sidney and cared for the residents. Together they also operated a hobby farm where they raised sheep, horses, cattle and most notably, show rabbits. As an animal lover, Mary enjoyed riding horses at the Silver Spur Riding Club in Sidney. She was an extremely patient and kind woman, and had the ability to be the voice of sensibility. Mary enjoyed playing Beano and cards, attending the local fairs, and making memories at the family camp on Messalonskee Lake.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Moody and her husband Richard of Livermore Falls; daughter-in-law Brenda Holbrook of Augusta; and a grandson, William Moody of Livermore Falls.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 2004, and her daughter Patricia West in 2014.
A public graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Haines Corner Rd., East Livermore. Arrangements are in the care of Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Rd., Jay. Tributes and condolences may be shared by visiting: www.wilesrc.com
