Mike, as he was affectionately known, was born on Nov. 25, 1957, in Connecticut, to Leigh and Arlene Otis. He and his family moved to Belgrade, where he grew up, graduating from Messalonskee High School in 1976. Mike graduated from Central Maine Vocational Technical College in 1981 with an electrician's degree and went on to work for SD Warren Paper Co. and Sappi Fine Paper as an electrical instrument technician and was a past vice-president of the IBEW Local 1768 electrical workers union.
Mike had a great sense of humor. In his free time, he enjoyed camping, hiking and bowling. He was an avid golfer and scored his first career hole-in-one at the Loon Cove Golf Course. Mike early on was very interested in home computers and loved listening to music and playing his guitar.
He was predeceased by his father, Leigh Otis, in June 1987. Mike is survived by his mother, Arlene Goodhue, and her husband, David, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his wife and high school sweetheart, Sherry Otis, of Lacy, Wash.; and son Matthiew Otis and wife Christine, granddaughter Brianna Nicole Otis, and grandson Jaiden Michael Otis, all of Torrington, Conn. Mike is also survived by his brother, John Otis, and wife, Barbara, of Belgrade; sister Kathy Parker and husband Steven, of West Newbury, Mass.; sister Sandra Doucette and husband Dale, of Albion; brother Patrick Sean and wife Charlene, of Waterville; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Redington-Fairview General Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center for the care he received while there. A funeral service celebrating Mike's life will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 12, 2012, at Friend Cemetery, Route 104, in North Fairfield. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Way.

We laid you to rest today. Although it feels like a final goodbye here on Earth, I know we will all be together again in heaven with hugs, laughter, great stories to share just like all are past family gatherings. You were my hero growing up - always looking after me, protecting me, and even occasionally scolding me when needed. Aunt Mabel always said you were the "heart" of the family, so we will forever keep you close to our hearts with all the wonderful memories you've left for us. Thank you, Michael - you touched so many lives by just being you: a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and friend.

To Sherry, Mikes mom, Mikes son, brothers and sisters. I had the pleasure to know Mike in person for the last 6 months in Washington. He talked so kindly of all his family and how he was raised. He was very proud of his parents and brothers and sisters. He talked about how Sandra made sure everything was taken care of for him. He showed me pictures of his grandchildren and his mom and everyone. He was proud of all of you. He loved Sherry deeply and assured me that you all would take care of her as family when he was gone. He said, that is just how it is in my family. He is now in peace and without pain. The pain in all of us left on earth is the only pain now. He was a great man and you all should be proud of him. May you all be comforted during this time with the memories you have created with him.

Michael, you were always my "other" brother? Although you had been officially "family" for not nearly enough time? I knew that you kept up with my life through Sherry? And the same way that I kept up on you! I know that you were at your happiest when you were with Sherry, or even talking to her over the phone? And although your time together was bittersweet, I know that your love had lasted for over 30 years. You and she were made for each other, You made each other better.Rest well, knowing that the rest of our families will take care of Sherry, the way that you always said that you would.Thank you for always being there, especially for her. Although you are greatly missed? We know that we will see you again.

To my older brother who always shared the funny pages, made me an "honorary" member of the "Route 8 Gang", and included me, a "lowly freshman" at the cool Juniors table at lunch. Hope you will still save a seat for me next to you in heaven - we'll have a lot of catching up to do.

To a wonderful friend, coworker, golfer, and bowler, please know that your wit, humor, insights and companionship will be missed terribly by Gale and I. We feel blessed that as a close friend, you were the one to marry the two of us. We will hopefully meet again for many more rounds of golf at the ultimate course.

Thank you Mike (Gunky) for all the wonderful times shared with your family. Annual 4th of July at Gramm Otis's, the miles of hikes we took, the hours of talk and letting me share so much with your family while Matt was growing up. Thank you too for marrying Rich and I more than 24 years ago. May you be in that peaceful, easy feeling that you loved early in the morning forever now.
