Norman Gray Obituary

FALMOUTH -- Norman A. Gray, 82, of Falmouth died Dec. 15, 2007, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his wife, family and friends by his side.

Norman was born on June 25, 1925, in Hallowell, the son of Leslie and Belinda Penn Gray. He attended Hallowell schools and graduated from the University of Maine School of Engineering in 1949. He served in the Navy, attending the naval pilot school. He also was a member of the Merchant Marines, serving on a Liberty ship in the Pacific.

Norman began his engineering career with the state Bridge Department. He worked the majority of his practice as a consulting engineer in southern Maine. Many of his projects included bridges throughout the state, hotels, marinas, piers and a floating restaurant. Norman took pride in his work and enjoyed the process. He was committed to his clients and earned the respect of the engineering community.

He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Carrabasset Valley Outdoor Association, the American Legion, Goodrich Caldwell Post 6 in Hallowell, the Monday Luncheon Group and the Tennis Group. Norman was a longtime skier at Sugarloaf USA and was dedicated to his garden each summer. For years, he and his Janice loved cruising the Maine coast in their 40-foot Novi.

Norman was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Irving Gray.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Janice Murphy Gray, of Falmouth; a brother, Herbert Gray, of South Portland; and several loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

According to his wishes, there will be no funeral. A gathering of family and friends of Norman and Janice will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at DiMillo's Floating Restaurant.

Norman was an avid reader and made weekly visits to Falmouth Library. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his memory to the Falmouth Memorial Library, 5 Lunt Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. www.khrfuneralhomes.com
