Patricia Edwards Obituary

AUGUSTA -- On Nov. 21, 2006, Patricia Lee Edwards was greeted by her dad to meet her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She died in peace, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Pat was born in Augusta on June 27, 1947. She was one of six children of Dr. Norman L. Edwards and Esther B. Edwards.

She graduated from Cony High School in 1965 and attended Becker Junior College in Worcester, Mass. Deciding to seek a warmer climate, she moved to Florida, where she worked in the pathology department at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. She went to work as a transcriptionist for the medical records department after the Imperial Point Hospital in Fort Lauderdale was built.

After living and working in Florida for 16 years, she decided to come back to Maine to be closer to her family and to start one of her own. For the next 16 years, she was employed at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta in the medical records department as a transcriptionist. During her last seven years, up to a week before she passed away, she was employed at Legal Services for the Elderly in Augusta as an executive administrative assistant.

At this time, the Edwards family would like to thank all at Legal Services for your caring, kindness and wonderful support that you gave to Pat during these last 12 months.

She was a lifelong active member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church and was on many committees, including helping her mother with the VIPs. She had also been a previous member of the Eastern Star and the Children of the American Revolution. She was quite involved with the Boy Scouts and Modern Woodman of America as her son, Jon, growing up, belonged to both.

Pat had many passions. One was the study and knowledge of our genealogy that she and her cousin, Sybil, spent many days and hours on. Another was tatting as she has made many different pieces for friends and family. She also had a green thumb and loved to work in her garden. She had a gifted talent for writing poetry and enjoyed doing all sorts of arts and crafts. Every Friday night she and her longtime buddy, Marni Grant, would sit around Pat's kitchen table and paint Ukrainian eggs until the wee hours of the morning. As Jon and her niece, Shannon, were growing up, Pat loved to sit down with them to do different crafts. She had a hankering for picking strawberries in the summer and apples in the fall and she would gather up three of her great-nieces, Mariah, Ali and Delaney, to go with her. She was an avid reader as well. She also enjoyed going down Route 1 on warm and sunny days to go "'Tiquin" with her three sisters. Maybe not always warm and sunny, but she loved it.

She cherished her visits with her granddaughter Ava, Jon and Jamie.

Her father, Dr. Norman L. Edwards, predeceased Pat, in 1990.

She left behind her son, Jonathan B. Edwards and his fiancée, Jamie Beland, of Hallowell and her 5-month-old granddaughter, Ava Leigh Edwards; her mother, Esther B. Edwards of Hallowell; three sisters, Marlene Black and husband Kenneth of Augusta, Deborah Billing of Augusta and Wendy Crowley of Waterville; two brothers, Richard N. Edwards and wife Elinor of Augusta, and Bryce K. Edwards and wife Olive of Augusta; 14 nieces and nephews and 15 greats. She also leaves behind her longtime friends, Bonnie Randall, Bobbi Harris, Vesta Cassidy, Ann DePasquale, Joan Grant, Marilyn Nason and Yvonne Irby.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 35 Grove St., Augusta, with a reception immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Legal Services for The Elderly, P.O. Box 2723, Augusta, ME 04338-2723.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com

I am a friend of Patricia's son Jon. When I met Pat years ago I realized then where Jon got his heart from - he has always been there for me as a friend when times got rough, the type of guy who would hand you his last 50 bucks if you were in a jam, and Pat was the same way. I'd go to visit Jon and if he was not home, I'd sit and talk with Pat. She always seemed to have an outstandingly positive outlook on things. When I see her granddaughter Ava, even though she is only an infant, I see that same calmness and happy nature that Pat - and Jon - both have. Pat, we'll miss you, your time here was not long enough but I'm thankful that you raised such a fine young man and saw your granddaughter into this world. Whenever I see Jon or Ava, I will think about you and your patience and kindness and love. You'll be greatly missed.

To the Edwards family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Pat, we may have lost touch but she was and always will be a special person to me. We lived together for a while in Florida and had many laughs. We both had sons about the same age and enjoyed sharing stories about them.
I will miss Pat, and I am so glad I had an opportunity to sit down and talk to her earlier in November.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

To Pat's family and friends, please accept my sincere consolences. I have been so blest to have Pat as a life-long friend and will always remember her as so very special. I was so amazed that Pat has such courage and grace with this disease. I remember ranting and raving about the injustice of it all and all of a sudden I heard Pat giggle and start to laugh and after she got control she said to me "Well I sure feel alot better now that I have that off my chest". I will also remember her sense of family and how in all the time I knew her, I never heard her say one bad thing about her family; she was always very proud of her "roots" and had great respect for her family. I could go on and on about Pat and I will cherish each and every memory but what I have learned from Pat is that her faith was her treasure and about a year ago she told me she had three months to live and she asked her God to give her more time so she would be able to see her granddaughter and it was granted. I will miss Pat so much but will remember her - grieve lightly but live strong and happy.

Love to you all, Vesta (Drapeau) Cassidy

I just want to thank you all for taking time to share your memories of, my aunt, Patty with all of our family. Patty was not only a very close aunt but also a friend and like another mother to me. She would do anything for anyone, as she did for me. She was always there for me at the lowest and toughest times of my life. Patty, my cousin and I did so many things together as Jon and I were growing up. It's going to be a struggle, but Jon and I are very close. He's a big brother to me, we not only have eachother, but a great family . And we will all help one another get through this terrible time. We will always have our memories and she will be with us in our hearts forever. Thank you all for your support.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you mourn the loss of your beloved daughter, mother, sister and aunt. It was such a privilege to be a life long friend of Patti's. My heart holds so many wonderful memories. I will miss her very much
I wish I lived closer to be able to see you all but be assured that I mourn along side of you.
She now has a much higher calling as she rests safely in the arms of her Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

I worked with Pat at the old Augusta General, then she joined us in Ft. Lauderdale. We lost touch over the years, but I remember Pat as being a very sweet person and I have no doubt she was a very loving mom. My condolences to the family.

I worked with Pat at Maine General in the early 1980's. We did not always see eye to eye but we always respected each other. She was a dedicated worker.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Patty. I remember hot, summer days at Emden Pond with her at Aunt Alice's and me at Nana Larson's camp..and the tires to swim with and to cannon ball off the float! Who would have guessed that sisters would have camps beside each other so that cousins (actually 2nd cousins) would splash and have so many fond memories of summers of long ago. Joni Demchak Gatcombe, Waldoboro (cousin via her Aunt Elva/her mother's oldest sister)...
