Roger Mallar Obituary

Roger L. Mallar
1932 - 2016
CAPE ELIZABETH - Roger L. Mallar died on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough. He spent the last nine months at Village Crossing Assisted Living in Cape Elizabeth. He enjoyed his time with fellow residents attending music concerts, sports talks, social hours and BINGO. It was a very happy home for him, and his humble nature and sense of humor were appreciated by many.
Roger was born in Waterville on Nov. 22, 1932, the son of Clarence and Gertrude (Jewett) Mallar. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1950 and met Katherine Bishop shortly after. They were married on June 16, 1954.
Roger joined the army in 1952, stationed at Fort Devins and served overseas as a radio stenographer. He came home to Augusta in 1956 and was hired as an engineering aide at the Dept. of Transportation. He worked his way through the civil engineering ranks and became commissioner of DOT in 1973. It was said that appointed officials didn't often elicit the universal admiration and respect given Roger, but his loyal and diverse following was a direct result of his integrity and reputation as a straight and honest man. At age 47 he retired from state government to private industry and opened Mallar Development Services.
Roger had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with friends and his three sons. This love of outdoors inspired his impressive collection of decoys. He spent many happy summers with his family at Bayley's Campground in Pine Point. He also enjoyed many winter trips with friends and family to the Caribbean. He loved the warm weather!
Roger was predeceased by his wife Katherine, sister Joyce, and brother Peter.
He is survived by three sons, Michael Mallar (wife Deborah) of Augusta, Daniel Mallar (wife Katheleen) of East Stoneham, and Steven Mallar (fiancée Lori Gowell) of Old Orchard Beach; daughter, Karen Michaud (husband Matthew) of Cape Elizabeth; three grandchildren, Kathleen Mills (husband Rich) and their daughter Emmalyn, Lauren Trip (husband Jeff) and their children McKayla and Hunter, and Justine Wainwright and her daughter Addison.
Visiting hours will be 10am to noon on Saturday, May 21, 2016, followed by a Memorial Service at noon at
Hobbs Funeral Home
, 671 US Route One, Scarborough. Online condolences may be shared at: www.hobbsfuneralhome.com

Michael, Karen, Danny, and Steven:
What great memories we all had at Bayley's Campground. Your mom and mine are laughing and singing "Bill Bailey" in heaven together. And now they are joined by your dad. My deepest sympathy to all of you during this time of sadness.

Love, Kendra Maroon
