Ruth Monroe Obituary

Ruth (Bailey) Monroe
1915 - 2017
GARDINER - Ruth (Bailey) Monroe, 101, of Gardiner passed away at Winthrop on March 25, 2017. Ruth was born June 11, 1915, New Sharon, Maine, daughter of Charles and Jennie (Purinton) Bailey.
Ruth helped with the chores of the family farm with her five brothers and sisters, and graduated from New Sharon High School in 1932.
In 1937, Ruth married Fred Monroe, a paper maker at the S.D. Warren mill in Gardiner. They raised four children; first living "in-town," then moving to their house on Pleasant Pond in 1960.
The rural location allowed for gardens, farm animals, and fishing with grandchildren. Ruth worked as a Gardiner Ward Clerk for several years. Many years of her life involved caring for elders in her home. Ruth was a member of The First Baptist Church of Gardiner.
After Fred's death in 1986, Ruth continued gardening, filling bird feeders, and watching the Red Sox. Following her recovery from a fall in 2012, Ruth became a resident of Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center in Winthrop. She enjoyed watching the cultivation of the Heritage gardens, reading the newspaper, playing cards, and cheering on the Red Sox.
Some of her lessons were: "Just put the seeds in the ground, dear. They will know what to do." "No sense complaining about it; that doesn't do any good." "You are lucky to have a job, dear." "Do a good deed each day."
Predeceased by her husband Fred, and oldest son, Leroy Monroe, Ruth is survived by daughter Arline O'Brien, and her husband, Michael, daughter-in-law, Sharon Monroe, son Lloyd Monroe, and his wife, Debbra, and Jane Bell and husband, Robert; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express gratitude to Heritage Living and Rehab Center and Maine General Hospice for devoted, loving care.
In keeping with Ruth's wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave Gardiner

I would like to send my sincere condolences to the Monroe family. I have many very good memories of them, as I spent much time at my aunt and uncle's cottage on Pleasant Pond (Harriette and Sam Freeman). My parents later owned the cottage. My cousin Karen and I especially liked it when Jane came down to visit and play. The Monroes were very nice neighbors, and I know Harriette and Sam greatly appreciated them. I miss all those happy times at camp. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Holly (Shepherd) Lanza
