Shepard "Shep" Lee

Shepard Lee Obituary

CAPE ELIZABETH - Shepard "Shep" Lee, 83, prominent businessman, philanthropist, community leader, died of cancer on June 23, 2010, at home with his family by his side.

Born in Lewiston on Nov. 13, 1926, Shep was the youngest child of Ethel and Joseph Lifshitz. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Harold.

Shep is survived by his sisters Dorothy of Auburn and Sylvia of New York City; his wife Candice Thornton Lee; his former wife Nancy Margolis of New York City; his children Beth of New York City, Adam of Cumberland, Catherine of North Yarmouth, and Jonathan of New York City; and five grandchildren, Jason Moyer-Lee, Sophie and Eliza Beckerman-Lee, Anna and Aaron Lee. Other survivors are sons-in-law Adam Beckerman and Robert Moyer; daughter-in-law Diana Lee; stepchildren Meg Zumba and Mathew Thornton, and his children Matt, William, and Madison.

Shep graduated from Lewiston High School, and then entered Bowdoin College. Interrupting his education to serve in the Navy during World War II, Shep graduated from Bowdoin College magna cum laude in 1947. He then joined his father's car dealership, Advance Auto Sales in Auburn. During more than 60 years in the car business, Lee Auto Malls grew to become one of the most successful dealerships in New England. Shep's son Adam, president of Lee Auto Malls, is the third generation to work in the family business.

In addition to Shep's business accomplishments, he was passionately engaged in public affairs. Shep was a committed Democrat who believed that through political involvement, he could help make his community, state, and country a more just and equal society.

Shep was a close friend, fundraiser, and adviser to Sen. George Mitchell, the late Edmund Muskie, the late Justice Frank M. Coffin. He was a member of the national board of the American Civil Liberties Union and a recipient of the ACLU's highest award, the Roger Baldwin Award. For many years, Shep was an active member of the NAACP in Maine.

While not a religious Jew, Shep's social commitments were informed by liberal Jewish values and he taught his children to be proud of their religious heritage. For Shep, being a Jew meant being concerned not only about one's own family but about those less fortunate or who were denied equal opportunity.

While a generous donor to Bowdoin and Bates colleges, Shep was especially devoted to public education. He served on the boards of the University of Southern Maine's business and law schools, the Muskie School of Public Service, and the Maine Community College board. He felt an obligation to support public education because most Mainers could not afford private college. For the same reason, he was a generous donor to the George Mitchell Scholarship Fund.

Shep was always on the go and had an insatiable intellectual curiosity. He loved to travel, to discuss issues, and to meet new people. He had no patience for social pretensions or hypocrisy and always called a spade a spade. Till the end, his sense of humor was as much a part of him as his bright eyes and handsome face. He loved to read, enjoyed all kinds of music, from Opera to Benny Goodman, Mahalia Jackson, Janis Joplin, Melba Moore, and Richard Dyer-Bennett. He was a great story-teller and mimic and his tales of the early days in Lewiston are now joyfully told by his children and grandchildren. More than anything, Shep adored his family.

The family will hold a private funeral. A memorial to celebrate his life will be announced in the next two months. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions in Shep's memory be made to: Mitchell Institute, 200 Monument Square, Suite 200, Portland, ME 04101

The family will sit shiva from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings at 6 Phantom Farm Road, Cape Elizabeth.

Arrangements are under the guidance of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.

My Dad, Sam Hurwitz, was a partner of Joe in the Advance Heel Co. but I met Shep when I bought my first car to take off to college. I have not lived in Maine since 1974 but do remember growing up there fondly. I have been moved by the many stories and details of Shep's life. Sorry I did not know him better. My deepest sympathy is extended to the entire family.

Maine has lost one of its greatest citizens but Shep's values, curiosity, generosity and extraordinary respect for humankind carry on in Shep's children, Jon, Cathy, Beth and Adam. Shep has been a wonderful role model for us all. Thank you, Shep for all that you gave of yourself.

I was sad when I read the newspaper with the announcement that we had lost Shep. He was a great man for our community, doing much and even more that people never heard about. Museum L-A had wanted to do his oral history to try and preserve all the knowledge of the community he had in his head and heart. Sadly, we lost him before, but wish to send Adam and family our sincerest sympathy for their loss. We certainly talk about Shep and use him as an example of commitment to community here at Museum L-A. Rachel Desgrosseilliers, Executive Director

Shep and Nancy were some of the first people to welcome my family to Maine when we moved there years ago. I have fond memories of playing at their house with Beth, a great buddy. We did a mean dance number to Boz Scaggs in their cool living room, swam in the pool and made pottery. I remember Shep as a wonderful dad, full of life and laughter. My condolences to the Lees, especially Beth.

To Adam, Don, John and the entire LEE family,
I share in your sorrow and will be forever grateful to the man who believed I could be more and gave me the opportunity to be just that. Shep, where I am today in my career I will always credit to you. When I thought I couldn't you said I could. You and Sen. Muskie shared stories with me about my Dad during the launch of the Jeep/Eagle building in Westbrook. Thank you both for taking the time. You two told me another side of him I never knew, Like you he too not only cared about his family but his fellow man. You understood what it is like for me to lose him at such an early age. You are and will always be a man for others to learn from and follow. May you rest in peace and shall you always be remembered for the caring man you always were. Mark S Walton

I did not know Shep personally, but our good friend, Phil Curry, drove him around the past few years, and we heard many humorous stories about their travels together. Nothing pretentious about Shep - just give him an ice cream cone or a tuna sandwich and he was a happy man! Our condolences to his family and employees. He was a great man who did so many good things.

To everyone in the family,

I don't remember when or how I met Shep, but he has been an inspiration to me for many, many years. He was a great man and I respected him so much. His story is one which should inspire all of us. You are in my thoughts at this very difficult time of loss.

My Uncle Leonard grew up with Shep in Lewiston. They graduated high school together and went off to Bowdoin. I have been regaled with Shep and Lenny stories since I was a teenager. And I got sick of them! But, now, what I wouldn't give to hear the same old crap one more time. Something about the Baby Bull and the Polar Bear, or whatever the hell these two knuckleheads called each other. A great guy with a good heart. Just like my Uncle Lenny.

I first knew Shep when I was the young e.d. of Maine Civil Liberties Union and he was our national board member. Among the many things he did to help the cause was to lend a car from the dealership so I could take a group of law students to Washington D.C. for military discharge upgrade hearings for Vietnam veterans. More recently, he developed a strong interest in the Maine Model United Nations after I helped get that program started. Shep was a mentor and an inspiration to many. He showed that one can do business and do good at the same time. I will miss him.

I am sad to hear of Shep's passing. I met him in 1972 when I was just out of Maine Law and he was the sparkplug and chief fund-raiser for a group called FAIR [Fight Against Income tax Repeal]. He was committed to the fairness and social justice of that form of taxation. I staffed the FAIR Steering Committee in the statewide referendum campaign and we won by a 4:1 margin. Thanks to Shep, Harry Richardson and other real leaders.
