Susan Dunlap Obituary

KINGFIELD -- Susan Dunlap, 64, of Kingfield died peacefully Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, at the Hospice House in Auburn.

A native of Northern California, Susan settled in Kingfield in 1974 after working as a physical therapist in Seattle and serving in the Army at West Point. In Maine she worked at Franklin Memorial Hospital and Androscoggin Home Care. She was the first to bring physical therapy to homes in Somerset and Franklin Counties.

With her life-partner, Donald Cutler, Susan enjoyed cycling, often riding a tandem in Maine's annual two-day multiple sclerosis benefit ride. She was a guitarist and tennis player. In keeping with her commitment to science and health, she arranged to donate her remains to Massachusetts General Hospital & Harvard University to assist in the study of ALS, a devastating disease about which little is known.

She is survived by Donald Cutler of Kingfield; Rick and Nancy Walker of Putnam, Conn., with their children Abe, Luke, and Victoria Walker; and her sisters, Louise Dunlap of Cambridge, Mass., and Sarah Galbraith of Washington, D.C., and David, Kate, and Jean Galbraith.

The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104, or to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.

Cremation services are by Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service, and Remembrance Center of Farmington.

Susan was much loved by all her in-laws. She will be greatly missed, especially that one weekend each year when she invited all to "Ride Day." It became a family reunion which all of us Cutlers treasured and planned for. Her memory will live on in our hearts.

Susan was a wonderful Life-Partner for my Brother Donald. My Husband and I met her in 1976,and she has been a dear friend to us since then. She was such a kind person, always with a smile. She always sent my Mom such nice letters, which she enjoyed immensley. Susan also was the originator of our Family "Ride-Day" every August at Susan and Donald's home in Kingfield, ME. This includes the guys riding their "dirt-bikes" on Saturday with a delicious barbeque at the end of the day. And, of course, breakfast at the "Woodsman" on Sunday morning! This year is our 20th annual "Ride-Day" which is happening Sept. 22-24. We miss you Susan, but know that you are at peace now.

For Don and all of Susans family, I would like to convey my deepest sympathy. She was a wonderful person and I will never forget her kindness to my mother,[Kathleen Dolbier] while she was giving her theraphy. She always had a smile and a kind word to say. She will be greatly missed by so many. May Peace be with you all in this time of extreme sorrow.
