Timothy Ladd Obituary

HALLOWELL -- Timothy Stuart Ladd, 59, well-known central Maine mechanical contractor, died Monday morning, July 9, 2007, from injuries suffered in a plane crash in Tyringham, Mass.

Because of his gift as a tugboat consultant and locomotive expert, as well as being an experienced pilot, he was known as "the plane, train and boat man." At the time of his death, he was enroute from Wiscasset to Hudson, N.Y., to assess work on a tugboat for his good friend, Gregg Hartley, who also died in Monday's accident.

In addition to Ladd's consulting, he was employed as a signal engineer by Maine Eastern Railroad, Rockland.

As one of his friends commented Tuesday, "Tim was into big things that moved: tugboats and locomotives, as well as float planes and tail-draggers..." He looked at the world from a mechanical viewpoint and was the "man on call" to help any friend or neighbor with a plumbing, electrical, construction or mechanical problem.

Ladd lived life to the fullest. He was a flyer, an avid hunter, a fly fisherman, a writer, and a skier -- passions he enjoyed with his three sons, Brooks, Spencer and Arthur. On the soft side, Tim was a balloon deliverer -- always carrying a helium tank, a bag of balloons and string in the back of his pickup truck for cheerups of friends, or for special occasions. He cared deeply for the people he loved and kept in touch with them regularly.

Before moving to Hallowell, Ladd was a resident of Canaan for more than two decades. More recently, Tim and his companion, Jennifer McGowan, have spent a great deal of time in Stratton refurbishing an old farmhouse and skiing Sugarloaf and kayaking the area rivers.

His work experience had been varied. At one time, he was vice president of Flats Industrial Railroad of Cleveland, Ohio. Other railroad work included stints with the Maine Central and Guilford companies. He also was a consultant to tugboat owners Arthur Fournier and Elliot Winslow.

Tim Ladd was born on Nov. 1, 1947, in Waterville, the son of Blaine and Madelyn Brown Ladd, who survive him. He was an Eagle Scout and was a 1966 graduate of Oakland High School, where he was active in skiing, music and theater. He attended both Unity College and the University of Denver in Colorado and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.

In addition to his parents, Blaine and Madelyn, of Oakland, and his companion, Jennifer McGowan, of Hallowell, he is survived by a sister, Kathaleen Ladd Turner and her husband, Glenn Turner; three sons, Brooks and his wife, Danielle, of Chelmsford, Mass., Spencer and his wife, Li, of Canaan, Arthur, of Hawaii, and their mother, Corda Kinzie; four grandsons, Mackenzie, Roland, Nathan and Matthew; two nieces, Kristin Turner Cronkite of Augusta and Melanie Turner of Farmingdale; a cousin who was like a brother to him, Brooks Hurley and his wife, Linda, of Anchorage, Alaska; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Route 137, Winslow. A celebration of Tim's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the farmhouse, 9 Rangeley Road, Stratton. Transportation will be provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local food bank in Tim's memory, or to the MS Regatta, c/o Maine Chapter MS Society, 170 US Route 1, Suite 200, Falmouth, ME04105, in memory of Tim Ladd.

Blaine, Maddy, Brooks, Spenser and Arthur, It was a great shock and sorrow to learn of Tims' passing, and our family extends love and support to your family at this time. It must of been so touching and of great comfort to you all the lives' Tim had affected with the outpouring of love at the memorial service and gathering afterwards in Stratton. The bright sunshine that day was the twinkle in Tims' eyes shining down on us all. Living on Embden Pond, and hearing float planes overhead, will always bring a smile to our faces and remind us of a great man and friend. Jim and Mona Gagne, daughters Melissa and Amy

Jennifer, Your loss is felt by those of us who are honored to call you "a friend." Even though I didn't have the opportunity to know Tim personally, the fact that he chose you to be his life companion says so much about the kind of man he was. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and may you take comfort in knowing that, even though cut short, the memories you have you will have for a lifetime.

Dear Aunt Maddy and Uncle Blaine, Corky, Spencer, Brooks and Arthur

... never will I forget all the great memories out to camp with Tim and the float plane rides. I'm surprised he could put up with some of the stunts me and Arthur pulled and the messes we left around camp. Memories that will never be forgotten! Tim will be loved and missed by all!

Dear Corda, Brooks, Spencer and Arthur,
I am so sorry for your loss, I have wonderful and funny memories of Tim. He was a very special person.

A wonderful, fun day at the 2002 Portland Harbor Tug Muster. Jeff and Tim pictured as preparations take place.

Blaine, Maddy and Family,

We are all sorrowful with the shock of Tim's sudden death, but we know it is part of God's plan as His ways are not our ways.

Jeff, Debbie, Jeremy and Abbott have reminisced about the wonderful, fun day that they enjoyed because of Tim's invitation to join him, along with Mr. Hartley and several others, at the 2002 Portland Harbor Tug Muster. It is a day that will always be remembered!

Chris called from England as soon as he learned of the accident to express his sorrow. He recalled earlier days when cousins Tim and Phil spent many happy hours at camp.

The other Ladd boys and their families love you. We will always be available to help you in any way possible.

Love,

Patrick McGowan

For twenty years I had two hundred adventures with Tim Ladd. Once when I was on Otter Pond next to Allagash Lake in a ski plane with a valve that was stuck in the middle of February. I removed the cowling took the valve cover off and popped the valve with a screwdriver. My fishing buddy John Watson said, "How did you know how to do that?" Tim Ladd was the answer. He was a good teacher and could fix anything. I am glad he loved my sister and she loved him. I wished that I had told him that before he died. This world is worse off with him not on it.

Jennifer and the Ladd Family,

I am saddened by your loss and wish you comfort in this time of sorrow. I last saw Tim when he and Eddy were working in the yard of the farmhouse. I will always remember how hard you worked to transform that diamond in the rough. When you came to Stratton and became my neighbor I was so pleased. If I can be of service in any way I hope you will not hesitate to ask.

Corda (Corky), Brooks, Spencer and Arthur, I was sad to hear of the loss of Tim. I am not sure if you remember me - it was 20 or more years ago - we all played together and I remember balloons, lego's and sledding... Tim was a good hearty man. My thoughts and prayers are with you. - With Light and Love, Jana

An interesting thing about knowing Tim and working with him on a number of projects for nearly thirty years was that some things never changed. I was just as mystified last week as to how he got some task accomplished as I was when I first met him. You never knew from day to day what was going to burst forth from his creativity, nor what cast of characters would be presented thru his humor. I lived with Tim on the job, worked long hours with him, sometimes to the point of exhaustion, and we still had fun, all the time. As difficult as a task might be, Tim always had time to watch out for the other fellow, opt for the common good, and maintain incredible good humor.

You'll always be with us best of friend.

Dearest Uncle Blaine,Aunt Maddy and all of Tim's Family and Friends,
I knew Tim was special, but I had no idea that he touched such a wonderful variety of unique people in so many ways. Because it is highly unlikely that he told all of you where his skills came from I would like to share a couple of possible ideas. The first Ladd to be born in Maine was a Timothy Ladd in 1775 in Washington Plantition, now known as Mt Vernon. They had 13 children. Imagine if you will the skills needed to raise this family in the woods of Maine. Now fast forward 232 years to the picture I just posted to this site. The Ladd's are mostly still here. Tim's dad my Uncle Blaine (top left)has 4 living brothers. My dad bottom right LLoyd, is 91, Abbott top middle is the baby he is 81, to his right is Beecher and bottom left is Chester. These 5 men can, do and did anything and everything. Whenever you have the chance ask them about their first car, first job, first love, first getting into trouble...you have the idea. Yes, Tim was special...but in reality he would tell you that he was simply doing what his wonderful heritage made possible. We will cherish his memory and we will carry on.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and relatives of Timothy Ladd.
I have read some of the stories about Mr. Ladd and he sounds like someone we would have enjoyed knowing. He will be truly missed.
My husband and I live just a few hundred yards from the site and were the first to notify the State Police of the crash.
If we can be of any help in lessening the pain of your loss, please feel free to contact us.

I first met Tim when he walked into my machine shop about 6 or so years ago to check the place out. The fact that he had arrived on a train which sat idling outside was quite unique. We specialize in large engine work and we imediately hit it off like I had known him for 20 years. His visits always led to great stories passed back and forth about repairing something or traveling someplace interesting. He always left me thinking that I hoped other people thought of me in the same way I thought of Tim. Special person not to be forgotten.

My condolences to the all the family and friends of Tim. Having worked with Tim over the last few years I quickly learned that Tim was a top shelf guy. I had a great deal of respect for his work ethic and honesty and always enjoyed his dry humor. Tim was always willing to pitch in and help and there was nothing that he could not do on the RR. The rail gang here at MaineDOT will miss him greatly for his skills and as a friend.

Tim's family and Jennifer,
I'm saddened by Tim's passing. As a friend of this very guiet person you always knew he was larger than life itself. I will always remember him as man of very few words but you always wanted to pay attention because you could learn alot by being quiet as he was.

My heart aches at the loss to all of us of such a fine individual who has touched so many lives and will be sorely missed by all who have known him and so cheated by those who did not have the good fortune of having known him. I lived next door to the Ladd family for many years and remember all the wonderful times shared with the family, and the many hours spent in the playhouse with Kathy. I lost my only daughter five years ago and know the pain and also know that there are no words to express the sorrow we wish to convey to you at your loss. Please contact me -the address is 921 Pequawket Trail, Steep Falls, Maine 04085. Love to you all. Sharyn

To: Jennifer and Tim's Family-- My condolences to you. I am deeply saddened. Tim was a dear friend and colleague.
