Willard Arnold Obituary

WILLARD B. ARNOLD III
1927 - 2017
WATERVILLE - Willard Bailey Arnold III, 89, of Belgrade died on Feb. 8, 2017.
Bill was born in Waterville on April 20, 1927, the son of Willard B. and Bertha (Terry) Arnold. Educated in the Waterville Public Schools, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Bowdoin College, class of 1951, a member and officer of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and earned his master's degree in retailing from New York University. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve (Hospital Corps) during World War II from 1945 to 1947.
Bill worked for the L. Bamberger & Co., Newark, N.J. in its training program before returning to Waterville in 1954 as the fourth generation to enter the family hardware business, W. B. Arnold Co. The retail division was closed in 1962, and he was employed by Chase & Sons of Watertown, Massachusetts in the advertising specialty business as State of Maine representative.
On Oct. 8, 1957, he married Joan M. Williams of Augusta in Charlottesville, Va.
He maintained an active relationship with Bowdoin College as a former Class Agent, a two term chairman of the Alumni Fund, a member of the Alumni Council, and later served on the Board of Overseers for fourteen years. He received the Alumni Service Award in 1967.
An active Republican, Bill was a Kennebec County Commissioner from 1961 to 1972, and was President of the Maine County Commissioners Association. He served one term on the Republican State Committee.
A former President of the Maine Publicity Bureau, as well as the Waterville Area Chamber of Commerce, he also chaired the State of Maine Heart Fund. He was a director of the Portland-based Peoples Heritage Bank (now TD Bank) serving on its Executive Committee. He was also a director of the Waterville Area Industrial Corporation, a trustee of the Waterville Regional Arts and Community Center (WRACC), and had been a member of the Waterville Rotary Club for 56 years.
In 1988 Bill was elected President of the Waterville Historical Society which operates the Redington Museum at 62 Silver Street, a position he held and enjoyed until 2004.
His interests were varied including gardening and landscaping, collecting original Currier and Ives prints, playing and promoting championship six-wicket croquet, managing the Arnold block on Waterville's Main Street, and promoting the Redington Museum for which he was honored in 2003.
He was predeceased by one son, Willard B. (Andy) Arnold IV. Survivors include his wife Joan; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Arnold of Salem, Mass. and her spouse Janis M. Cotter, Margaret L. Arnold of Beverly, Mass. and her spouse Marisa J. Kelly; his daughter-in-law Jean of San Francisco; one granddaughter, Olivia Lane Arnold, and one grandson, Willard B. (Will) Arnold V; and several cousins.
The family would like to thank Bill's friend, Chris Warren, and the staff of Lakewood Manor and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care.
At his request there will be no memorial service or funeral. I just learned of Bill's passing. My history with him goes way back to when I was a child. Both my mother and father worked for Mr. and Mrs. Arnold (Bill's parents) back in the early 60s, and I have many memories of them. Years later, I rented a retail space from Bill above Jorgensen's Coffee Shop in downtown Waterville, and he was my landlord for three great years. A stand-up fellow, intelligent and kind. The world is a sorrier place without him. My condolences to his wife and daughters.

Dear Joan, Beth, and Margie,
We were so saddened to read about the passing of your husband and father. We know how hard it is to lose a parent, because we have lost them. When we have had our loved ones for our whole lives, their passing leaves us with loneliness that is deep and wide and long. We looked at the photo gallery and enjoyed seeing your family -whole and happy. May the memory of those happy days comfort you in the days ahead.
We did not know your father as well as we knew all of you during your school and sports days. Those were our early days as Waterville residents. But, now that we have lived in Waterville for so long and we have developed a closer association with the Waterville Historical Society, we have come to appreciate so much that your father had done here. Thank goodness Bill had such deep roots here and he recognized the need to preserve Waterville's history, especially since 1900. His presidency of the Waterville Historical Society for so long is testament to his commitment to Waterville. We have heard many wonderful stories- told by others who knew him well -of contributions of his time, energy, and philanthropy to Waterville and the State of Maine, which were remarkable. His loss is now felt by a very large community.
With our sincerest condolences, Mark and Tina Serdjenian

Joan, Beth, and Margie, I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear this news. Your father was always such a wonderful man, and I have many happy memories from childhood of hanging out at your house and having a great time with your family. Seeing the photos you posted reminded me of good times in Waterville over the years. I hope that memories comfort all of you, as well as knowing that we are thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers. Love, Emily

It is so sad that sometimes as a nurse we only get to meet people at the end of their lives but within that time we share so much with them and their family. I feel honored to have been there for you all.

To Joan, Beth, and Margo: I wish to pass my condolences on the passing of a wonderful man, who was a husband, father, grandfather, and so much more. His legacy as a family man, professional business leader, and above all, an avid Waterville community leader will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege to know him. My loving parents, Don and Anne Harris, had the highest admiration for Mr. Arnold, as I still do today. God Bless Family, and may your hearts be healed over the passing of time. -Brice (Barbie) G. Bill was a wonderful friend, neighbor, host, community member and historian. He was truly a gentleman and a gentle man. I will never forget our mutual love of the Belgrade Lakes, the old neighborhood in Waterville, and the fun we had at the Arnolds' home on Snow Pond playing croquet in the Arnolds' Belgrade Invitational Tournament. My heartfelt sympathy goes to Joan, Beth, Margie, and Andy's family at their loss of a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

I am sending my love and condolences across the miles. It has been our pleasure to be a part of the extended Arnold family through our deep affection, connection, and love of Andy Arnold. With love and peace, Kevin and Linda Crayton
