William E. Leavitt
1934 - 2015
PITTSTON - William E. Leavitt, 80 of Pittston, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on July 17, 2015. Bill, as he was called, was born at the Gardiner General Hospital on August 23, 1934 to Ellsworth Arthur and Sarah Marjorie Leavitt. He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1952. Upon graduation Bill went to work for Swiften Company as an accountant. Bill held many jobs throughout his career, working for the State of Maine as an auditor, and for the Bureau of Intergovernmental Drug Enforcement. He was most known in this community as proprietor of Leavitt Accounting Agency. Bill was active in the community through his support of the Gardiner Youth Sports programs, his support of the Gardiner High School Band and his work in the Sophomore Awareness Program held at Gardiner High School. He was most proud of his position as a member of the "chain gang" for the Gardiner High School Football team. Bill was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Gardiner.
William was predeceased by his parents; sisters Nancy Lee and Maxine Goodspeed, brothers E. Leonard Leavitt and Robert Leavitt. He is survived by his daughters, Laurie Leavitt of Gardiner, Mary (Leavitt) Bailey and her husband Tom of Pittston, his son William A. Leavitt and wife Cathey of Farmingdale; a sister Margaret (Leavitt) Staples; grandchildren, Christopher Bailey and his wife Natalie, Mathew Bailey, and Lauri-Beth Rankin and her husband Keith, William B. Leavitt, Mellissa and her husband John Skovronski, and David Cunningham.
Visiting hours will be Sunday July 19th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner A celebration of Bill's life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Gardiner on July 20th, at 3 p.m. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the First Baptist Church of Gardiner, Memorial Fund.
