I read about your courageous son in The Outpost by Jake Tapper. His life is a testimony to the many who served with him and to those who now read of his service to our country and most importantly Jesus Christ. Your son continues to inspire even today. I have a son who serves in NSW and I pray his faith is as unwavering as Benjamin´s was. God bless you.

Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Benjamin D. Keating US Army Captain.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Every so often when I reminisce my childhood in Springvale, I think of you Ben. I'm proud to call you my friend. And I wish that we could have re-connected more after we followed different paths in our lives. Our memories with each other live on and I tell them to my children. Beginning at First Baptist Church where I discovered God, love and fellowship to BYF on Sunday afternoons, exploring the woods behind your farm, church canoeing trips, camping trips and watching Kelly's Heroes before we shot our BB guns... you were a great friend and someone I always looked up to. Blessing to you and your family. Ken, Beth and Jess, I hope to see you all again someday soon. Until then your family is always in my heart.

I never knew 1st Lt. Keating, but I learned about his life, his service to our country, his bravery and valor, his looking out for his men and, ultimately, the tragic sacrifice he made.
I think of him often. I hope that my sons turn out to be as great a man as he was.
Godspeed

Today is 8/26/2013 and I am writing in the hope my message will be forwarded to Ken and Beth Keating. Today, every major TV network spoke of Outpost Keating in the honoring of an Army Staff Sergeant awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism in a fierce battle at Outpost Keating. In fact two Staff Sergeants were awarded our highest award for valor for their heroic actions on this battlefield named in honor of your son, First Lieutenant Ben Keating. When I saw the newscast, I remembered all I had read about your son's bravery and goodness in "The Outpost". I just wanted to let you know that your son is in my thoughts, as are you. With love and respect.

Ben and I went through the Classics program at UNH together and I considered him a good friend. To say that we came from opposite ends of the philosophical spectrum would be an understatement. But Ben always showed me complete respect for who I was as a person. I never felt judged in his presence. For anyone one that had ever met Ben this should be no surprise. Not only was he a caring person, but his thirst for knowledge and willingness to engage with people of different opinion was outstanding. I always have respected Ben and always will, and I miss him terribly. It is ironic that the one person from college that I wanted to meet down the road and learn about all the amazing things that he had done is the one person I will never get a chance to see again in this life. The fact that I haven't talked to him in over 8 years and still miss him this much speaks volumes to his character. I find some comfort in the fact that most people who had known Ben feel the same way. Ben died fighting for what he believed in. Much respect and love.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Benjamin, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Today I visited the moving wall, and it made me think of Ben. He was the first Platoon Leader I received in Bravo Troop. He was also the best LT in the Squadron. He was not only a good Soldier and Leader, but a good friend. He was always willing to lend a hand for anyone. The Army and this country are both at a loss for such a great man. He will always be remembered.

I was the medic that took care of Cpt. Keating that November night. I have no words to express what I went through and I still go through thinking of him. I wish I could have done more to save him. I deal with guilt and regret every waking moment. I Know I did all I could do its just that it still hurts. I can only imagine what your family went through and is still going through. Just know that he was an officer that i wish all officers would at least attempt to be like. Please contact me...

So a year has passed and I still miss him. I still think of him daily and remember every great memory we ever shared. Ben was an angel and each day I am reminded of the best friend I always had and the friend I will continue to have. Thank you Ben for being an amazing man, friend, brother, and son. You always new how to touch the world and I miss you more than anything. May you always remember how much you are loved. I love you and miss you!!!!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Ben was my Platoon Leader in Bravo Troop. Together we built an outstanding group of soldiers who went on to be very sucessful throughout the deployment. He was a Leader. Not by rank or position but by actually leading. His intelligence, personality, and professionalism were the example. He always made you better. Even after Ben went to Alpha he marched 12 miles with me just to push me. I will miss him. I wear his KIA braclet so I am reminded every day of what he represented.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Mr. & Mrs. Keating and Family,

I had the great privilege of serving with your son in B Troop when he was first assigned as a new lieutenant. I was the Troop 1SG and part of my job was to assist in developing new officers. I can honestly say I learned as much from Ben as he did me. He continued to do a great job with A Troop here in Afghanistan. It was always a pleasure to have a conversation with him. He was a honest and mature young man with a promising future. I will miss those conversations and that great sense of humor he had. No one could tell a story better. He was a good man, and I am honored to be able to say he was a friend.

To Mr. and Mrs. Keating and Family,

Please accept our family’s deepest condolences and utmost respect for your son’s Benjamin service to his country. Our daughter 2nd Lt. Lindsey (Burke) was a classmate (2006) and cadet in ROTC with Benjamin and spoke so highly of him to us and in the New Hamphire student newspaper article. As my wife Deborah and I read about Ben we were struck by how Benjamin and Lindsey shared so many similar interests in History, ROTC, Language and Literature. It was as if we were reading about our own child. What a truly remarkable and precious young man Benjamin was. As parents, we will remember Benjamin and your family in our prayers.

As Parents and Americans, we want you to know that we do share in your loss, to the small extent that can. We are all one family and will remember Benjamin for his exceptional character and for the short but distinguished life that he led. May God bless and keep Benjamin and your family always.

To the Keating family,

The news of CPT Keating struck a chord in the UNH ROTC program's heart. Although the senior class now were just freshman when Ben was in the program, those that had the chance to meet him feel blessed.
It is always difficult to lose one of your own, and with CPT Keating being the second casualty to come from this class, time has seemed to stop. He was a wonderful person and soldier that offered much to those lucky enough to spend time with him. As freshman, we had a lot to learn, and he was willing to teach.
CPT Keating is in our thoughts and prayers, and our deepest condolences to a family that has stood by his side.

I can remember the first day we bacame friends like it was yesterday. We met our sophmore year of college when we had our first PT Session for ROTC. We were lost but we new we would stick together and figure out whatever it was we were suppose to do. Ben always new how to take charge of any situtation and solve any problem thats what made him one of the greatest leaders and people that have ever been in the military. His dedication and drive to succeed in life always made me want to be better. His positive attitude and caring heart made him a dear true friend who will always remain in my heart. He always said to remain positive and life will soon work out. Even though his time has passed he will always remain in the minds and hearts of me and in everyone he has ever met. His spirit will live on within us because he has blessed our lives and will continue to bless others. Your son was my best friend and will remain in a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. I am so sorry for your loss but I know he is happy where ever he may be. I miss you all and send my deepest sympathies for this sad loss of an amazing man and friend.

December 7, 2006

It was such an honor to know Ben through our time at UNH ROTC, to be given the opportunity to interact with such an outstanding young man, to play a small role in the military leader he became. As a member of the Senior Class during Ben's Junior year, I was afforded ample opportunity to instruct, evaluate and learn from Ben and his classmates. What I learned during that time is immeasurable, in no small part because of Ben.

All this being said, my greatest honor came on Monday the 4th of December, 2006. I had received a phonecall from another of Ben's Classmates explaining that Ben would be coming home that day through Manchester Airport. A detail was being put together to act as pallbearers. I jumped at the chance to participate. As a soldier who has been called to combat and returned, it was amazing to be so directly involved in the care of Ben Keating. I was honored to be able to pay respects to Ben in this fashion.

It was wonderful to meet Ben's family. Upon seeing Ken, Ben's father, we were all taken by the striking resemblence. The courtesies extended to us as Ben's pallbearers by the Keating family will not soon be forgotten.

Should you notice a figure standing in front of Ben's grave, right by the river and in view of the Baptist Church, rendering a slow, smooth deliberate salute, rest assured it's just Ben's classmates, cherishing the memory of their fallen brother.

We'll meet you on the high ground Ben.

I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

To the Keating Family-
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of Benjamin. We feel your grief and pain. Our son, SPC Justin O'Donohoe, was in Benjamin's Cavalry Troop. He was killed in Afghanistan in May. His mother and I know full well that no words can ease the pain and all the good intentions and wishes don't make the grief more bearable. We hope that you, like us, can draw comfort in the knowledge that our sons were crusaders in a righteous cause and were doing exactly what they wanted to be doing with their lives when the time came for them to be called away from us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult of times.
"And they who for their country die
Shall fill an honored grave,
For glory lights the soldier's tomb,
And beauty weeps the Brave."

TO The Keating Family,
Although you may not know us, please accept our deepest sympathies with the loss of your son. While my husband was home on his R&R in November, he spoke very highly of Ben and how far of a leader he had come in such a short time, being so new to our 3-71 Cav Unit. May peace be in your hearts this holiday season. God Bless to you all. SSG James A. Smith Jr & Family

The shock of Ben's passing is eclipsed by my memories of him as a young boy who went to school with our son, John. Ben's smile and his endearing attitude remain in our thoughts. I have never ever heard anyone have anything bad to say about him. He was obviously a person of extreme commitment and dedication to his family and country.
I think about him and through my sorrow at your loss, I glimpse his endearing smile.
Our hearts overflow with grief at your loss and we pray that you find solace with your memories of a wonderful young man.
