David Dixon Obituary

David William Dixon, 61 1947-2009 WHITEFIELD -- David William Dixon, 61, passed away Friday, May 15, 2009, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after complications involved with his heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. He was born in Lewiston, Nov. 12, 1947, the son of Harry W. Dixon Jr. and Gertrude (Golder) Dixon. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1966 then graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. David was extremely involved in many community organizations; he was selfless as is evidenced by his more than thirty years active involvement with the Coopers Mills Vol. Fire Dept., as a wearer of many hats, most recently, Assistant Chief. He was a leader of the local Boy Scout troop, a member of: the Whitefield Fire Department Long Range Planning, Comprehensive Planning, and Town Building committees, and an active member of the Whitefield Lions Club. He has spent his professional life on a quest to better develop and understand many elements of environmental protection, focusing on air quality. He has been a registered professional engineer since 1982 and has worked for several environmental corporations including over 18 years at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Over the years he has served on numerous advisory committees, professional societies and has been a voice of informed input for local and state government. David loved the outdoors and spent much of his free time going to the beach with Gwyn to commemorate having met at the beach, tending to his many flower and vegetable gardens, and golfing with many friends all over the state. He is predeceased by his mother, Gertrude (Golder) Dixon. He is survived by his father, Harry W. Dixon Jr. of Lewiston; his loving wife of 32 years, Gwyn; their two sons, Todd and wife Kylee of Solon, and Justin and girlfriend Jessica Harrison of Bozeman, Mont.; sister Carol Corson of Skowhegan; and niece Tabetha Kresge and husband John also of Skowhegan. Visiting hours will be held at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Rd., in Windsor, on Monday, May 18, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service to be held at the same location at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, with graveside services to follow at the Coopers Mills Cemetery on Main Street. Condolences may be expressed at www.lawrybrothers.com. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Rd., Windsor (800)660-2111. The family would like to thank the caring nurses of the Critical Care Unit at Maine General, and the doctors both at Maine General and those at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care that lead the courageous fight against his cancer, and that gave him a chance to spend the end of his life peacefully, and with his family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating blood, donations to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, or to the Coopers Mills Volunteer Fire Department New Building Fund. I just recently learned of Dave's illness. I worked with David in the Bureau of Air Quality Control for a good number of years and always appreciated his willingness to work to meet the needs of an industrial applicant while ensuring that air quality laws were met. I appreciated his efforts and enjoyed working with him. You are in our family's thoughts and prayers.

To the Dixon Family,
Words seem too shallow to express my condolences on your loss. Dave and I have worked on many projects together over the years and I will miss him. I had known him to be a remarkable individual and I'm certain that there are enough stories about his life to fill many volumes. My prayers are with you during this very difficult period.

Dave was my Supervisor from 1995 - 1998 at EARTH TECH. His kind demeanor, keen dry sense of humor, incurable optimism, and "knowing his stuff" taught me a lot about getting along in the working world, as well as how to handle difficult people. My favorite Dave stories were about the Moose in the Pond, and the traffic light falling on his car at an intersection while he was helping Jeff Harrington move. He was a great person, great Supervisor, and a dear Friend that will be sorely missed. Sincerely - Shawne Deary, Linda, Patrick, Evan and Ryan.
