Edgar Varney Obituary

Edgar W. Varney Jr.
WINDHAM -- Edgar W. Varney Jr. (a.k.a. Junior) of Windham, died in the afternoon on June 13, 2007, at the Cedars in Portland. He was born the son of Edgar and Myrtle (Hill) Varney on July 12, 1928. Edgar was educated in the Windham school system graduating from Windham High School in 1946. After graduation he worked with his father in a family logging operation until 1948 at which time he was employed by S.D. Warren Paper Company retiring in 1990 with 42 years of service. He was a member of S.D. Warren 40 Year Club and a member of the United Pulp and Paper International Union.
Edgar (Ed) married his wife Pauline (Sorenson) on May 19, 1950, and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Ed loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper, but most of all he loved to roam the back roads of Maine just enjoying the wildlife and nature. There probably isn't a dirt road in Maine that he hadn't traveled at one time or other. We are sure that his wife Pauline (Polly) can tell many stories about these travels, some good, and then there are others.
In later years, he enjoyed yard sales and was quite the bargain hunter. But most of all he loved his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ed is predeceased by brothers, Earlon and Everett Varney both of Windham; sisters, Marion Lowe and Katherine Hawkes both of Windham. He is survived by his wife Pauline of Windham; four children, Thomas O. Varney of Bethel, Jeffrey W. Varney of Windham, Jody L. Doty of Pinehurst, N.C., and Tracey A. Chambers of Windham; sisters, Carrie Cobb of Dayton, Shirley Sangilo of Portland, and Eleanor Rollins of Windham; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Per Ed's request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at 10 a.m., at the Smith Cemetery, Windham. Arrangements by Dolby Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may

Thank you for all the wonderful childhood memories of camping, fishing and family. You were a teacher of values such as honesty, hardwork, and the appreciation of the outdoors. I will always remember the many things you taught me. God will now have a new hunting and fishing partner. Many happpy trips.

Polly, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of another of Myrt's beloved family, your husband Edgar It was only yesterday I sent my condolences to Earlon's wife, and discovered you folks again. How well I remember you and your folks from my days as Myrt's co-worker and friend at S.D.'s, and the visits to your showers and family events. The marching of time takes us, but we can never erase the memories good friends have made. God has been good! Frances Mains
