Edward Connolly Obituary

Edward Connolly, 82
SCARBOROUGH -- Edward Connolly, 82, of Pleasant Avenue, died on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Maine Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
Edward was born in Portland on June 17, 1931, the son of Henry E. and Gladys L. Milberry Connolly. He attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1949. He went on to continue his education at the Gorham State Normal School.
Edward married Dorothy G. Butts at St. Patrick's Church on Sept. 5, 1953.
Edward worked at Bancroft and Martin for 25 years and then accepted a position at American Steel, from which he retired. Ed worked as a realtor for over thirty years and was working in that capacity for Maine Real Estate Network until his untimely death. He was a longtime communicant of St. John the Evangelist and now St. Maximilian Kolbe Church and a member of the Scarborough Lions Club for over 40 years. He served on the Board of Directors at Town & Country Credit Union for 45 years. He also drove for Meals on Wheels for several years. In his spare time, Ed was an avid golfer who shot a hole in one and also enjoyed bowling.
Ed lived and loved life. Ed loved to play sports and always competed to win. Although he battled asthma, he became a cross-country state champion at Portland High School. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren compete in sports and perform in the arts. There were few sporting events on television that Ed wouldn't watch. He loved to travel with his family and with his wife, Dorothy, whether it was on an exotic cruise or to the capitals of Europe. Ed loved to serve people and worked countless hours to better the lives of the less fortunate. Most of all, Ed loved his family. He was a role model and demonstrated every day what it meant to be a loving and faithful husband, father, grandfather, friend and colleague.
Edward is survived by his wife, Dorothy Connolly of Scarborough; two daughters, Jean Marie and her husband Michael Walker of Cornville, Bernadette Louise and her husband Gregory Jones of Glenburn, a son, Michael Edward Connolly and his wife Melissa Ryan of Westbrook; a sister, Marguerite and her husband Arnold Bernstein of Scarborough, two brothers, Richard Connolly and his fiance Jean Lee and Robert and his wife Linda Connolly of Portland; four grandchildren, Sean M. Walker of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jared P. Walker of Portland, Anne R. and Quinn M. Connolly of Westbrook; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Friday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Rd., Scarborough. My heart goes out to Ed's family and friends. I worked with Ed years ago at Edgecomb Steel while I was a college student. I was always amazed at Ed's vibrance and love of life. He was a mentor to me at the time, always encouraging and helpful. Although it was thirty years ago, I've never forgotten Ed and his kind, upbeat personality. In life, it's often amazing to me how many lives people impact in a positive manner and never know it. Ed was one of those people. My sincere condolences.
