Johnson McDermith, 80
DENMARK - Elizabeth (Betsy) Johnson McDermith passed away peacefully at her home in Denmark, on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015. She was born in Kankakee, Ill., on Sept. 19, 1934, the daughter of William Adam and Elizabeth (Everest) Johnson.
After attending public schools in Windsor and Branford, Conn., she received a BS degree in Biology in 1956 from the University of New Hampshire, Durham. As an Air Force wife she lived in Japan, Germany and at bases from New Jersey to California. Her sons were born in Florida, Germany and Texas. She retired to Denmark in 1978 where she and her husband renovated their (c) 1842 homestead and began a roadside farm stand which they operated for 25 years. She was widely known for her excellent pickles and sauerkraut.
Betsy was a volunteer for many years at the Bridgton Coffee Shop and the Denmark Library. She was an active member of the Denmark church and served on several civic committees. She helped with various Lions' projects and was a member of the Denmark/Bridgton Homemakers Extension. Betsy was also an avid counted cross stitch and rug hooker, having designed many original pieces.
Betsy was predeceased by her two sisters, Katherine J. Racer of Florida, and Carolyn J. Parker of Willimantic, Conn.; and her husband Clark M. of 58 years. She is survived by her sons, Clark Lee (and his former wife Sharry) of North Berwick, Kirk Everest of Denmark, and Kenneth Adam (and his wife Kristin) of Delmar, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren Clark Wyeth and Olivia of N. Berwick, Elizabeth and Emily of Denmark, and Kenneth, Christopher and Colton of Delmar.
A service will be held at the Denmark Congregational Church, E. Main Street, Denmark, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick.
