Geno was the greatest!! Life could suck but if you were going to play Geno's everything was ok.Geno never judged anyone and always cared about his bands. We were family up there.I've traveled all over the world playing but if I was asked to name my favorite club owner it would be Geno.He was a man of peace in a world of mayhem. So long good buddy!!I'm a better person for knowing you.

Like many other people, I've known Geno for a long time. My brother had his wedding reception at his Bernardston Inn in Massachusetts. Damon Runyon could not have come up with a more original character than Geno. I have a lot of great memories of Geno over the years. His heart was as big as the heavens. I'm sure both he and my brother are now talking horses like they used to do.

I cannot begin to count the number of magic, epic, hysterically funny, and all-round great times I had at Genos in the 80's and 90's. Didn't matter that we were a small town band from Portsmouth. We always felt like stars in Geno's place. Love to JR and the family from Gandhi's Lunchbox. Every time we raise a glass, its to Geno.

Geno had a very strong faith in his God. My dad would see him in church every Sunday. Geno had a special place in his heart for the underdog. He truly cared about people. If God measures how much a person has given to others in this life, He has embraced Geno with open arms for all eternity. Miss you Geno!!

I don't think any of us can quite picture the Portland music and arts scene without Geno. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to be a part of it in the last 30 years, owe the man an enormous debt of gratitude.

I am so saddened to have learned of Geno's passing. My heart goes out to JR & the family. I will always remember Geno for his warmth and with a twinkle in his eye. He made Geno's what it was and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed in the Portland rock scene. So many of us have memroies of young adulthood that conjure up memories of Geno, and that span through out ours lives. I hope he knew how many people he was a part of and how many of us he touched. I can not believe I will never see him again. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Geno was a great guy, a Portland icon, and a real character. Condolences to JR and family.

My sincere condolences to JR and extended family over Geno's sad passing. Like many other Boston area musicians, Geno offered us a home away from home, in body and spirit. For the music scene, there was always a classic rock hall to play, but there was also something much greater. Geno made us family. No matter how many years went by, the warmness in his eyes when he greeted ya was as if you were the only person that mattered. He knew names, stories, and remembered everything about ya. He cared. For close to 25 years Geno has been like family to me. He remains loved, but now, sadly, missed. Not Fade Away.

To family and friends of Geno, we met in early 1983 and have returned to perform in Portland nearly every year since. Geno's is one of the few venues in New England to have supported new music consistently, for which Geno will be kindly remembered, and sorely missed. Eric & Deb

Gene D'Alessandro otherwise known as my poppy was quite a unique Grandfather. I always loved his visits where we would play cribbage non-stop and he would tell his different stories collected from over the years or just last week. I am one of the older gradhcildren and very lucky to have known him as long as I did. Most people might have known him as "the prince of Punk Rock In Portland Maine" but I knew him as Poppy. A funny, loving grandpa, with a "warm tenor of a a croak for a voice" (I got that from the newspaper with the article about his lifetime achievement award). He was the coolest grandfather ever. And I will never in my life forget him for a second.

JR and the D'Allesandro family,

Patti and I were very saddened to hear of Geno's passing today. He was one of the first - and most unforgettable - people we met in Portland, which has become our home away from home. His memory will long remain in our hearts; our thoughts are with you.

Shortly after Geno opened his basement club on Brown Street, I offered to take care of booking his entertainment. He had the savvy to trust me, and over the years I found him to consistently be a man of honor & integrity. He truly enjoyed & understood the bands that played there, and became good friends with many of the musicians. Geno provided a cozy venue where bands & fans alike could convene, and he never interfered in anyone's freedom of expression. Geno was indeed a patron of the arts, and his presence will sorely be missed.

I was saddened to hear that Geno passed away.

I am a musician in Boston who has been playing Geno's since 1983,and I feel very lucky that I got to meet Geno, play his club, and just shoot the breeze with him each time I came to Portland.

Geno (and JR)have always championed rock and roll, and I send my deepest sympathies to the family.
