McMarthy, you did a lot to St. Marys Medical Center in Eldoret Kenya. You are never out of our minds. The lives you touched and put smiles on their faces will forever pray for the family.

We, the Medical Missionaries of Mary working in our Health Facility - St. Mary's Medical Centre, Eldoret,Kenya are very saddened by the news of the death of Dr. McCarthy. Our deepest sympathy goes to all who are mourning the loss of a beloved father and grandfather. Our belief in the words of Jesus "whatever you did to the least of my brothers or sisters, you did it to me" assures us that he has been given a big welcome by the loving Father whom he faithfully served.

Though we never had the privilege of meeting Dr. McCarthy, we feel we know him as a friend. Obviously, he was a man with a big heart. We are witnesses of his care and generosity toward people in need. For many years, he contributed geneorusly to our mission in Kibera slum in Nairobi. Since 2008, the support he has given to our mission here in Eldoret has made a huge differnce to the lives of some very needy people.

Dr. McCarthy cannot be forgotten around here. We wish to assure all the family members, friends and relatives who are grieving, that he is remembered with gratitude in our community prayers. We remember you all in a special way at this sad time.

Fr. Damian - thanks for your prayers, i can picture your calm contemplative demeanor at mass in the monastic chapel at Our Lady of the Rosary in FL. And I recall our dinners at Lost Tree sponsered by Dad. Many thanks to Fr. Paul and the rest of the brothers. Thanks for your reflections Sr. Roberta, and God Bless.

Lauren - thanks for the input, you're amazing! What with ages 6 and 8 yrs old. Anyway, I found these guest book entries by accident, but they are quite comforting.

Speaking for the family, I can say (and I'm winging it) that my father's life was great, because of all you wonderful people who remember and share a loving memory of him. Thanks to each of you.

With love,
Paul Eugene McCarthy

My prayers are for Gene's family for their loss. In the limited time I had to meet with him he was an inspirational and spiritual man who had a profound effect on me. His caring and generosity he has shown me, my family and others is a small indication of the type of person he was. He will forever be missed and loved, rest in peace. Bill Mitchell

Dr. McCarthy was indeed a generous, caring person. Among the many educational institutions which received his loving attention was the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome for which he funded a chair in honor of his son Joseph. Nor did his generosity stop with educational institutions. He was particularly concerned with religious orders of men and woman, especially for their novices. What a marvelous legacy of love he leaves behind!

My deepest sympathies to the McCarthy family, on the loss of your father, grandfather, and brother. What an amazing and wonderfully charitable man! I so enjoyed meeting him and all of you at the annual dinners on the occasion of the "Joseph lecture" which took place at Boston College over these past years. The lecturers and the new "McCarthy Chair" that will be assumed by Richard Gaillardetz next year at BC is a wonderful tribute to Dr. McCarthy. May he now rest in peace, reunited with his wife and son Joseph. Peace,
Sr. Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM (Assoc. Prof. of Theology at BC)
