Glenys Tarlow Obituary

Glenys Lee Tarlow, 89
STAMFORD, Conn. - Glenys Lee Tarlow, daughter of Marion (Rapoport) and Abraham Venner, known affectionately as Didawee, died peacefully at home in Stamford, Conn., April 25, 2013. Born in Portland on Oct. 19,1923, she grew up on Munjoy Hill and graduated from Portland High School '40 with high honors. She worked at Plummers Insurance Company during which time she met her future husband, Bill, who was stationed at Fort Williams. They were introduced at the Jewish Community Center USO on Cumberland Ave. After the war, they settled in Great Neck, N.Y. and later in Roslyn Heights, N.Y., raised four children, became active in various organizations and worked as a legal secretary. Glenys and Bill retired to Heritage Hills in Somers, N.Y. where she participated in book groups and there began her love of rare books, especially those of Kate Douglas Wiggin from her beloved State of Maine. With her notable collection of Wiggin's books, she presented many lectures at libraries throughout the country, including Baxter Society in Portland. Her books now reside in the Maine Women Writers Collection of Westbrook College/UNE. She also spent many happy years volunteering at Archives of New York Philharmonic and the John Jay Homestead. With their love of books and history, Glenys and Bill visited every Presidential Library on their way to Scottsdale, Ariz. and Longboat Key, Fla., where they spent many winters, among other trips to England and Israel. Memorable summers were spent at their cottage on Little Sebago. Both were avid bridge players.
Glenys was predeceased by her adoring husband, William F. Tarlow, in 2000; and her son, Andrew (Adrienne); grandsons Jeffrey and Yossi; and sister Esta Venner Astor (Dave). She is survived by sons Lawrence and Reuven (Nechama), daughter Lee Miller(Leslie); grandchildren Rachel (Samuel), Henry (Traczie), Zalman, Chanie (Meir), great-grandchildren, Zevi and Maika; and sister Judith Venner Halpert (Stephen); and many nephews, nieces; cousins; and lifelong friends. Services were held at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, NYC and burial in Paramus, N.J.
