Irene Williams Obituary

Irene E. Williams, 101
RAYMOND -- Irene E. Williams, of Raymond, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Oct. 11, 2014, just 13 days shy of her 102nd birthday.
She was born in Lewiston on Oct. 24, 1912. She was the only child of Arthur Johnson and Virginia (Bragdon) Cary.
Irene married Clarence V. Williams and together they raised six children. She was very active in Girl Scouts, Brownies and Boy Scouts. She spent summers supervising school children in the local fields picking beans and strawberries. She was active in the Lutheran Church in Portland until being moved out of state with her husband's work. She and her husband moved back to Maine when Clarence retired. She was well known for her cooking, canning, making great pies and cookies. In her later years, Irene would knit hats, gloves and baby layettes and donate them through Southern Maine Area on Aging for needy children in the Portland area.
She was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church of Portland for many years and most recently a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Windham. Irene was the oldest resident of Raymond and was honored to hold the Boston Globe Post Cane. She was a member of the Friendship club in Raymond and a former member of the ladies auxiliary of the Raymond Fire Department.
She is survived by six children, Carolyn Schwenk and her husband Gerald of Whitehall, Pa., Judith Caputi and her husband Robert of Hull, Ga., Susan Williams who lived with mother and was her caregiver for many years in Raymond, the Rev. Donald Williams and his wife Lois of Narragansett, R.I., Scott Williams and his wife Beverly of Boca Raton, Fla., and Dana Williams and his wife Angela of Naples. She had 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 21 great- great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

I remember Clarence and Irene with affection from my time as their pastor. Vivid to me now at the news of Irene's death nearly 35 years later comes the recollection of a sunny summer visit with them in Raymond and of Irene's graciousness and hospitality. We pray in our ritual not only that our beloved dead may have abiding rest but that light perpetual will shine upon them. That heavenly light seems to me very much as both the bright sunshine of that remembered afternoon and as the delight of its conversation.
