John Davy Obituary

John Robert
Davy, MD, 77
PORTLAND -- John Robert Davy, 77, formerly of Portland, died suddenly on Sunday, March 28, 2010, in Beaufort, S.C., after a prolonged illness.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Carmel Myers Davy; and three daughters, Sarah Davy Muscat of Cape Elizabeth and son-in-law Paul Muscat, and their three daughters, Rachel, Claire and Emily Muscat; Vanessa Davy of Asheville, N.C., and her daughter Celeste Kilgore; and Miranda Davy Treat, and son-in- law Robert Treat, and her daughter Meg Palombo of Plymouth, Mass. He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph T. Davy Jr., and is survived by two sisters, Margaret Virginia Davy of Reading, Pa., and Elizabeth Jane Davy of Flemington, N.J., and one brother, W. Richard Davy of Portland. He also leaves 10 nieces and nephews.
Dr. Davy, known to his family and friends as 'Jack', was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., to Elizabeth Booher Davy and Ralph T. Davy Sr. Jack attended Haverford High school, where he enjoyed wrestling and soccer. He then attended Yale University, graduating in 1954 with a degree in American Studies. He attended Temple Medical School in Philadelphia, Pa., followed by service in the Navy as the assistant attache and embassy physician in Djakarta, Indonesia.
After fulfilling his Naval service, he returned to the U.S. where he attended the Harvard School of Public Health and earned a master's degree. He then moved with his young family to Portland, where he served as the city's Director of Public Health for several years before leaving to start a private practice in adult medicine. He was a founder of the medical practice that evolved into Portland's Intermed. He retired from clinical practice in the 1990s and retired to South Carolina. He has spent every summer for more than 35 years on Cushing's Island in Casco Bay.
Jack was often described as 'larger than life', approaching many endeavors with great enthusiasm and charm. He possessed a special ability to relate to and understand people, which aided him greatly in his career as a physician and won him the loyalty and admiration of patients and colleagues. He took great interest in local and international politics and enjoyed reading multiple papers every day. He loved many sports, especially boating, skiing and tennis. He also remained throughout his life devoted to his summer home on Cushing's, where he would collect and tinker and enjoy talking to the other summer residents, of whom he was universally fond. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010, from 2-4 p.m., at the Dataw Island Clubhouse, Dataw Island, S.C. A memorial service will be arranged this summer in Portland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent
to the Haiti Relief Fund.

My heart is very sad to think of a world without Dr. Davy in it. He was my Dr. from his first few months in his own practice until his last day in office when he was so happy and excited to be leaving to reunite with his wife and together look forward to the birth of his first grandchild. I was living in Portland,Maine at the beging, then kept him as my Dr.after marring and moving to Hampton,NH.He was a wonderful Dr. beyond words, and I have missed him.My heart goes out to all his family, cherish all the good memories you have and be comforted that his retirement years with family and friends brought him great joy.Sarah Parker Letourneau, North Conway,NH

My sincere condolences on the loss of Jack, of whom I have fond memories. He did, indeed, relate well to everyone, not just his patients, but to his fellow physicians, as well. His opinions and observations were always highly regarded.

I can hardly believe I am writing in a guest book to remember Jack after his death. I cannot comprehend that I will never see him again or hear his voice or see that crooked smile. I was so looking forward to Jack and Carmel's return to Maine in the spring. This is the end of an era and the end of our 35 year friendship. I am flooded with memories. Thanks for mentioning the apricots, Debbie, I had forgotten about them. Jack had a loving and generous heart. He was interesting and interested. I loved him and am deeply saddened by his death. With love and prayers to Carmel, Sarah, Vanessa, Miranda and extended family. Sharman

I had the best job ever fresh out of college working with JRD at Park Medical Building. He was a well respected physician, taught me great work ethics, and I loved his sense of humor. I'll always remember his stories, those office Xmas parties, and his apricots and delicious cheese that were tradition. We shared a passion of downhill skiing (think this helped get me hired!) and he was a true role model that will be missed. My sympathies to his family for this heartbreaking loss.

I worked with Dr. Davy or, JRD as we called him, at Portland Internal Medicine. He was a leader, a stable presence, a mentor and the object of deep affection and devotion from patients and staff alike. I remember two things in particular: first, the man would eat anything (what's a little mold) and second- Friday afternoon trips to the airport. During the time when he was making regular trips to Grand Rapids I would sometimes give him a lift to the airport. Let's just say he was relaxed about the time needed to get to the airport until we were on the way to the airport. I have vivid memories of his encouraging driving hints as he recommended that I deal with backed up traffic by speeding down the breakdown lane. He was a wonderful man. I'm sure the stories will fly as you remember him. My sympathies to his cherished family.

We will miss Jack's friendly hellos when walking past his home and seeing him working on projects outside. He was always looking for ways to help out other islanders, with kind words or a helping hand. Jack was always genuinely happy to see us each and every spring, and we will really miss his presence on the island this summer and in the future. We wish the best to Jack’s family, his kindness and loving nature will never be forgotten.

It takes a special character just to live on an island (myself included). Jack was an extra special character. We always kidded each other (Jack included) about all the stuff he had; however, if there was something that was needed, Jack probably had two of them and would gladly go find it for you. He will be missed but his legend will live on for a long time. The jail will not be the same without him. I count it a priviledge to be the island's captain but more so for having had Dr. Davy as a friend.

Jack was the sweetest and kindest of friends. He was a treasure to us on Cushings, a dear man, and a delightful friend with whom to pass the time on a summer's evening. We will miss him, and send hugs to Carmel and his daughters and loved ones.

I mourn the loss of my dear friend Jack, on whom I have counted for so many things. My heart goes out to his dear wife Carmel, and to his wonderful family. His death leaves a hole in our lives that can never be filled. His compassion, strong character, and sparkle will never be forgotten by those who have loved him.
Thanks for everything, dear Jack.
