Memories and Condolences
for John Reed

Not sure what to say?

November 12, 2012

To the family of John H. Reed,

Our family sends condolences to the Reed family for their loss of a great man. I had the pleasure of meeting John about 6 years ago when he stopped by my hotdog truck in Oakland and we began chatting. It wasn't long before we realized we were second cousins-once removed. Growing up I recall my father Henry and grandfather Gordon Lamoreau speaking fondly of John as Governor of Maine and his dedication to create sustainable, accessible and affordable higher education for Maine students. The world is a lesser place without him.

With sympathy,

The family of Henry and Addeline Lamoreau

Dear Cheryl and Rudy,

I had the pleasure of visiting your dad at North Pond a couple of summers ago with Camilla. His mind was still sharp, and we had a delightful visit. My fondest memory of him was the patience he had when he taught me to dive. When he became governor I remember how proud I was to say that I knew him and his family. He served his state and country well. Maine was blessed by his efforts.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

On a day when we are celebrating elections, I am also celebrating the life of former Governor John Reed who was in office when I was growing up. At that age I didn't have a clue about politics but I was taught to have respect for people. I have very fond memories of going ice skating with the Governer and Mrs. Reed at the Blaine house where the old tennis court used to be. They would come out and skate with us kids and Mrs. Reed would hold our hands as we skated along. As a child it made me feel proud and special to have them interact with me and all the children in Augusta they came in contact with!

I have wonderful childhood memories at North Pond of my mother and Gov Reed engaged in the 1960's politics and local Maine issues while they sat by the lake soaking up the last of the day''s sun. John Reed's gracious manner and kind spirit lives on. Rest in peace.

I, personally, will miss very much his phone calls from North Pond each summer, asking for the latest updates on PEK & "the boys" (the undergrad Brothers). It was always like having a chat with my father.

Dear Cheryl and Rudy,
I have many fond memories of your father, driving us to Bangor to have our braces tightened up (ouch!), and trips to the Blaine House from Colby for lunch, among them. I went to the Republican National Convention in San Francisco in 1964, where your Dad nominated Margaret Chase Smith for President. He was a fine man and a dedicated public servant. My condolences to you and your families.

To Cheryl and Ruth.... I was very sad to learn of the passing of yet another-- from my family. Your Dad was a cousin to my mom, Jean; she was one of the Skofield twins. Johns' father was a brother to my moms' mother (my grandmother Gertrude). Please accept my condolences. Your Dad served the state of Maine -- and this nation-- with 'Aroostook County' values. I keep you in my prayers....

Cheryl and John
Please accept our sympathies on the passing of the Governor. He will truly be missed and although he served at the highest level of government, he was still an Aroostook County potato farmer at heart. We will miss his attendance at Maine State Society events and the stories he used to relish us with.

Governor John was a family friend. My Mothers family was a Fort Fairfield one. My Father served in the Maine Legislature with the Gov. So I and all of the people of Maine should be thankful that we had a man like him. Whenever I saw him at he family camp on North Pond I would stop and talk with him. He always wanted to know about the Grant family. Rest in peace. Vernal
