John H. Shaw, M.D., 84
MANCHESTER -- Dr. John Hodgdon Shaw, 84, died on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Heritage Rehab & Living Center in Winthrop.
John was born in Tilton, N.H., on July 15, 1929, the son of the late John Alfred and Mabel (Hodgdon) Shaw.
He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1951 from the University of New Hampshire and graduated from Tufts University Medical School with his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1955. Following graduation, he served in the General Surgical Residency Program from 1956-1960 with Maine Medical Center. From 1960-1962, Dr. Shaw became a base surgeon with the United States Navy at Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Throughout his medical career, Dr. Shaw was employed with Regional Memorial Hospital in Brunswick, Courtesy Staff (1960-1965), Maine Medical Center, Courtesy Staff & Surgical Selection (1960-present), Kennebec Valley Medical Center, where he worked his private practice in General, Vascular and Microsurgery (1962-present), Augusta General Hospital, Chief of Surgery (1964-1966) and Chief of Staff (1969-1975), Veterans Administration, Togus, Consultant in Surgery (1981-present) and Augusta Mental Health Institute, Consulting Surgeon (1962- present).
Dr. Shaw's teaching experience included lecturing in anatomy, obstetrics and gynecology at Maine Medical School of Nursing (1955-1960), laboratory comparative anatomy at University of New Hampshire (1950-1951), anatomy, abdominal and genitalia injuries and emergency medical training course at Augusta Mental Health Institute (1974-1975) and was Adjunct Associate Professor in Surgery at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice (1975-present).
He was elected to several medical societies, including Maine

Medical Association and Cumberland County, Kennebec County and New England Surgical Societies. Honorary societies included Alpha Epsilon Delta, National Premedical Honor Society (1949-present) and Phi Chi, National Medical Fraternity (1952- present). He was also active in fraternal organizations Augusta Lodge #141, Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, Kennebec Valley Shrine Club, Fishing Club of America, Ducks Unlimited and American Medical Fly Fishing Association.
Dr. Shaw was also a Corporator of Maine Savings Bank in Portland, member of Sugarloaf Ski Club and International Atlantic Salmon Federation, and served on the Board of Directors with Sports Alliance of Maine.
John's hobbies included, but were not limited to, fishing, hunting, skiing and boating.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sue Fechtner Shaw of Manchester; his son, John 'Jay' Shaw Jr. and his wife Charlotte of York, and his daughter, Hillary Riposo and her husband Philip of Sagamore Beach, Mass.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 23, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta. A celebration of John's life will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24. All are welcome to continue in the celebration of his life at a reception at the Augusta Civic Center immediately following.
